Georgia arrests parents, takes 15 year old son away after MJ stops his seizures

The pharmaceuticals weren’t working. The 15-year-old boy was having several seizures per day, and his parents were concerned his life was in danger.
So Suzeanna and Matthew Brill, of Macon, Ga., decided in February to let their son try smoking marijuana — and his seizures stopped for 71 days, they say.
The Brills’ decision led to the boy, David, being taken away from his parents, who face possible fines and jail time after being charged with reckless conduct for giving him the drug.
David has now been in a group home for 30 days, and his seizures have returned. He is separated from the service dog that sniffed out his seizures, and he is able to communicate with his parents only during short visitations and phone calls.

They maintain they made the right decision for their son’s health, despite their current predicament.
“Even with the ramifications with the law, I don’t care,” said Mr. Brill, his stepfather. “For 71 days he was able to ride a bike, go play, lift weights. We were able to achieve that with David medicated not from Big Pharma, but David medicated with marijuana.”
Ms. Brill said the authorities “want to argue the legality of marijuana instead of taking care of the kid.”
quote:
Ms. Brill said that she had been upfront with David’s doctors about the marijuana use, and that they hadn’t protested. But then she told the boy’s therapist on April 19, and hours later the police were at their door.
The police drug-tested all three of them: Mr. Brill and David tested positive for marijuana, Ms. Brill tested negative. The parents admitted to the police that they had given their child marijuana, and the officers demanded they stop, Ms. Brill said.
“We complied, and within 14 hours of complying we were rushing our son to the hospital,” she said. “And it was one of the most horrific seizures I’ve ever seen.”
quote:
The Twiggs County sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
David stayed in the hospital for a week before being taken to the group home, Ms. Brill said. The parents were arrested and spent six days in jail, causing Mr. Brill to lose remodeling work, he said.
So the state decides to take away a kid from his parents for acting in his best interests, make him go into worse health, and then arrest his parents...
All because certain politicians like to protect their war on drugs cash flow from "dangerous" drugs. They protected and served the hell out a 15 year old kid and his parents for doing the right thing.

According to the federal government there is absolutely no medical quality to marijuana. It is dangerous and addictive and absolutely banned for the good of the country.
Substances the government deems safer than marijuana:
Combination products with less than 15 milligrams of hydrocodone per dosage unit (Vicodin), cocaine, methamphetamine, methadone, hydromorphone (Dilaudid), meperidine (Demerol), oxycodone (OxyContin), fentanyl, Dexedrine, Adderall, and Ritalin, Products containing less than 90 milligrams of codeine per dosage unit (Tylenol with codeine), ketamine, anabolic steroids, testosterone

Well, until the law is changed, what exactly would you like to happen?
Remember that if you set the precedent that ignoring the law is Ok in this case, you now have to deal with a million people trying to exploit it.

In my own little perfect world a lot of directed jury nullification. Unfortunately the idea of jurors thinking for themselves in situations like this scares the bejesus out of prosecutors, to the point where mentioning it is a one way ticket off of jury duty.

Where’s the fricking common god damn sense? This is what’s better for the child? I hope the people involved with this decision start having seizures like this kid. frick those cünts

Why would a parent have marijuana anyway? Once you have children you shouldn’t be getting high all the time you should raise your kids

Common sense.
This kid is thrown in a group home because his parents gave him something that helped his seizures.
That’s absurd and you know it.

Would it not make more sense to go to a state that allows such things to avoid this exact scenario?
ETA: I don't like this situation at all and agree the outcome is absurd, but you can't just not enforce the law for these parents and not expect consequences.

So fine them.
They deliberately treated these people like fricking cartel drug dealers. This is insane.

Not gonna pretend I know the law in GA, but I have a feeling what they did merits more than a fine.

I’m sure it does too.
But sometimes you can have common sense and look the other way when it’s in the best interest of the child.
Fine them, say “if you keep doing this, we will arrest you, so maybe go to a state where it’s legal.” I don’t know. Do anything other than throwing this kid in a group home to deal with his seizures like an orphan.
