Why would I buy Genesis over a Lexus?

Same idea...both gussied up over their Hyundai/Kia/Toyota counterparts. Except Toyota/Lexus has the reputation of world class reliability and quality.

I'd go Acura over Genesis too.

But not Infinity. Everyone knows about Nissan/Infinity and cultcha.

To be fair, there is a stigma associated with the brand because of the years of economy offerings. They’ve done a ton of work to rebrand, and I think for the money, it’s hard to beat. Resale will be tough, so it’s a long term buy

Most accurate take in here. Hyundai/KIA’s rebranding efforts are not dissimilar to what the Japanese big 3 went through in the 90s. And yes, America largely still thinks of them as low quality brands, so resale will be terrible (if that matters).

As to the initial question re: quality, it seems to be a mixed bag. There have been pretty substantial recalls for engine failure in both SK and the US, but there are examples of engines from that crop going 1 million miles. An anecdote: my girlfriend put 200k on her 2014 Elantra in 7 years; it developed an engine knock around 190k and then a tree fell on it, finally totaling it. It never left her stranded and she put it through hell and back (lots of miles, hit a couple deer, brutal winters, countless Home Depot runs, never kept up with maintenance, typical woman shite). That was enough to impress me.

At least Hyundai and KIA have trended up and improved over the past 20 years. Honda is largely trading on name and has several issues with both their turbocharged engines and CVT transmissions. Nissan has been utterly lost since 2010 and produces some serious junk. Toyota and Lexus are still great in terms of quality. The Germans (BMW, MB, and VAG) are all dogshit at this point in terms of reliability.

A company that has quietly stepped their game up immensely is Mazda. Their cars and CUVs feel extremely premium for the price, the engines are dead reliable, and they (so far) have refused to make the jump to CVTs.

It’s hard to buy a truly bad car nowadays, but some brands and models are a cut above the rest. Hyundai/KIA should be on the list for anyone looking at small cars and CUVs, although I don’t know that the Genesis sub brand is worth the premium price. Life’s short, if you dig the Genesis then get it. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with your ownership experience.

Because genesis has updated their cars more recently than 2005. Toyota makes a good product but all of their cars are aging

Did you look at the G80? It has a lot more room than the G70.

Brother in law had a Hyundai (parent brand) and it was built like a tank. When he was a poor college kid I helped him maintain it and it was pretty easy to work on. I’d feel good about buying any Hyundai product from a reliability standpoint.

Now resale? I hear you get murdered on resale. If you want goof resale buy a tundra, f150, or Silverado. It’s amusing to see a five year old truck selling for more than an Audi that cost more of the same age.

Almost bought a used Hyundai Equus with the 5.0 V8 before they branched off and rebranded it as a Genesis G90. I was pretty amazed with what you got for the price. Back then, their initial depreciation was huge, and you could get one a couple of years old for a really good price.

My Jeep had a lower sticker price than my wife's BMW by about 8K, and was 2 years older. When we traded the BMW in last year, we could've gotten more than double the trade in value if we would've traded in my Jeep.

ETA: they had the same mileage, too.

I did but I wasn’t a fan of the styling and it was just north of my price range (especially since they were marking them up $5k past MSRP, frick that lol).

The G70 felt like a blend of sport and luxury, the G80 felt like a gangster-mobile.

Mazda continues year after year to impress me with their styling, reliability, and price points.

While I understand where you're coming from, I am fairly certain every Lexus/Toyota has now been updated from the electronic standpoint.
