Once you put gas in it, you can't return it. They are only supposed to take a return if it is unused. I'm not talking about defective items. If you use a generator and it breaks in the return window, home depot usually takes them back.

In my case, I called the manufacturer support and they suggested I bring it back to HD….lol

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't even check half the time. I purchased a cheap router from them only to take it out of the box and it be full of sawdust. Returned it and picked a different one off the shelf and wouldn't you know....this one was also full of sawdust.
I recently purchased a generator in TX after realizing I'd been putting it off and wanted to be prepared in the future. They had signs up saying absolutely no returns under no circumstances due to the storm in LA. They are used to dealing with people buying them as a "just in case" and returning them if they can get by without having to use it. The hoarding of items in a situation like that is pitiful.

Hmm. Lowe’s had non returnable signs on their generators. I wonder if that was enforceable

Buying something like that, using it then returning it after is the height of trashiness. Not surprised the trashy people of Baton Rouge Gonzales would do such a thing

People are idiots.
When the next hurricane hits, they’ll all scramble for supplies again.
And hopefully they will resubmit their receipts to FEMA for the reimbursement and get caught on FEMA fraud.

as soon as the power came back on, they were getting 50+ returns a day.
that's a classless as people who don't put the shopping carts where they belong after using them

Were they still in boxes... or open like they were used?

I saw a number of adds on FB marketplace where some entrepreneurs bought a bunch of generators, loaded them into trucks/trailers, and were then selling them in effected areas for increased costs. I wonder if they over-bought and had "inventory" left over?

I went to HD the morning of the storm where they closed at 8:30am and I got there like 2 mins before. I saw no less than 10 pickups (couple had trailers) getting 10 to 15 generators each. Ryobi 6500w $799 a piece so tax was like $875. So $875 at 15, they were buying over $10k at one time. My assumption was that they have 15 friends/family that would each individually claim a generator from FEMA and would return to HD to double dip. HD is/was complicit in this scheme because they were letting an individual run 15 separate transactions to get a paper receipt per gen.
Only unknown at the time was if FEMA would only allow $500 reimbursement like in Lake Charles in 2020 or $800 like it came to be for Laura. These people made out like thieves in the night.

I just looked on Craigslist and there is a small amount of "New In Box" generators on there. That amount should go up when the $800.00 hits their accounts.

Just saw your post before I posted mine. I can confirm with my 2 eyes that this is exactly what went down. And HD let them re-run their credit card multiple times for the ones that were going to do the double dip with FEMA if that was the route they chose over acting like a re-seller down in Houma etc.
I'm all for capitalism but this was ridiculous.

You think govt can track that?

So many idiots in here who don’t realize how many generators were returned. Yes many of the generators were returned to Home Depot and all the stores gathered them and sent them over to the store on Coursey. They were offering 25% off of the Ryobi and Champion generators that were returned. I don’t believe 50 a day every day were returned as OP is exaggerating.
Stines sold 4500 generators and said they only had about 50 returned and most were due to faulty CO2 sensor.
