"Dude" you were 10 or 11 years old when AOL made this change. What do you REALLY remember of it other than what you read on the internet?
What is the "it" you're referring to?

Why argue with him? He’s old and we’re dumb young 40 year olds

The extent of my internet knowledge then was Leisure Suit Larry and printing boobs on dot matrix

AOL offering "unlimited" internet access.

My parents were pretty conservative so the Internet was more of an adult thing. My dad also thought video games were a waste of time, etc.

Bottom line: if you've ever gotten into a brawl with your sister because you kept picking up the phone to boot her off the net, you are my people.

That's not my point at all. My point is there is a difference knowing about something from reading about it, and knowing about something for experiencing it.
You guys aren't wrong per se, you're just missing a bunch of the subtilties that occurred around the same time that caused everything to coalesce. In fact, I'd argue that broadband internet did much more to expand the internet than AOL's unlimited internet did. That's because broadband enabled music video and gaming that dial-up could never handle. God forbid that you didn't have a local AOL number to dial into...

Your point is that unlimited internet existed in the early 90s which while technically true goes against everything discussed ITT

I remember a world in which practically no one outside of universities or the military talked about "the internet". I remember getting my first computer when I was 10. I remember having that computer for several years with no internet, being utterly fascinated that my little book of Encarta CDs had replaced the bookshelf full of encyclopedias that I could see from the computer desk. I remember thinking Magic Carpet was the shite and having to dig around in DOS to get my copy of The 7th Guest to actually install. I remember finally convincing my parents to "get the internet". I remember starting to see "websites" referenced in ads on TV. I remember "home internet" still not being a thing that was assumed or expected well into my teens. I remember being in high school when that transition really happened, when "not having the internet" became a person problem that people weren't really willing to compensate for.
Any other memories you're curious about?

lol. our youngest son found a DVD case in our closet last weekend, pulled the disc out, and started hurling it across the room like he’d discovered a new sport.
When we took it away, he melted down because we stole his “circle toy.” I spent a solid minute trying to explain to both him and his brother that DVDs aren’t toys, they were how we watched movies before streaming existed. I gave up pretty quickly. It felt like explaining AI to my parents.

I keep telling myself I'm going to go back and replay it. Either because of said DOS/Windows frickery, or just some issue with the disc, there was a puzzle that would glitch out and freeze every time, no matter what I did, so I could never finish it. I need to remedy that at some point

Turns out, “deal with it” is an effective parenting technique.

I played it again probably 15 years ago and it’s probably best left in your memory bank
I’ve been trying to find a way to play the Jane’s and Wing Commander games so I feel your pain
