I understand and agree that it is their right to deny anyone who is "living in sin" the eucharist. It just seems like it is an inconsistently applied concept. How many divorced but not annulled and remarried catholics are knowingly allowed to accept the eucharist? It seems like a fairly similar situation.

That's not possible.
Unless they get married outside of the church, which would mean the church doesn't even recognize their marriage.

maybe the guy did not know that the priest knew

Oh and by the way is a wet dream a sin since you never actually touch yourself?
Of course not. You had no consent of the will, which is obviously a requirement for sin.

I'm not a Catholic so perhaps one of our Catholic firneds can either verify this or correct me where I'm wrong, but from what I understand if you're divorced and Catholic you cannot accept the Eucharist.

I would think none. I don't think people understand that there's a book called the catechism of the catholic church and all the rules are printed in there. The priests aren't just making this stuff up as they go.

The church cannot save a soul that is unrepentant. Even if this was an opportunity, would he have been willing to denounce his "civil" marriage and live a chaste life?

He likely didn't know.. But the priest knew likely by reading about who was being buried. So as protector of the Eucharist its his responsibility to not provide it to someone he knows is living in mortal sin. Many people get in line every week and simply go up and are not taking the Eucharist the priest typically gives them a blessing.
The guy in the story probably receives the communion at whatever church he attends because he isn't broadcasting that he is gay and married to the priest. In this specific case it sounds like it was broadcast to the priest.

it was in the obituary that he was married

This. The Catholics stand up for their beliefs and refuse to compromise and conform to the modern pressures of the world.
Many protestant churches today should just rename themselves the Church of Theological Compromise.

You can receive communion if you are divorced but it depends on the circumstances.
If you are not remarried and the reasoning for the divorce does not put you in sin. You are OK.
If you are divorced and go to confession immediately before mass then you are OK
The same for any serious sin.

I still respect the Catholic Church, and because of that respect I decided to not try to get the Church to conform to MY views. Instead, I found a church that more closely reflects them.
the guy wasn't aware of the churches stance on the issue

Ardillo said he would have stayed out of line if the matter had been broached before his mother’s funeral Mass.
So he was trying to receive the sacrament without knowing the rules of it? That's the church's fault?

Fair enough. I'll go along with that. I probably wouldn't really know. It just seems like there a lot of divorced catholics out there nowadays. I know a friend of mine's father bought himself an annulment (kind of fricked up) so that he could get remarried in the church.

meh, I'm not ghey, but am Methodist. I don't expect them to give me the wafer.
Mind you, Catholics are welcome to take communion in my church, no questions asked. We're not stingy with it.

My dad was married to another woman for 1 year then divorced and had the marriage annulled by the church before I,was born. He still will not go to communion even though he is allowed.
As was said many times. Repenting Frm his sin would mean he would have ended his Sam sex marriage and ceased being gay. Obviously he wasn't going to consider it so he is still in sin
