Garbage disposal is making a humming noise and not turning

I've rotated the flywheel clockwise a few times and it isn't turning freely.
I'm thinking there is something metal stuck in there.
Any hints?
I don't want to unhook the damn thing.

Get a flashlight and pull out the rubber cover and look around

Stick your finger in it while it's turned on and try to free the blade.

1) Unplug it from the receptacle.
2) Try the reset button on the under side of it.
3) if that doesn't work, keep turning it clock and counter clockwise to insure it is not clogged up.
4) if this doesn't work, replace it.

Stick your hand in there and clean it out as much as possible.
Take hand out.
Run some water and try to see if it works.
If it still isn't running, flip the switch to turn it off. Look underneath your sink at the bottom of the disposal. There should be a red reset button. Push it. Wait a second and then try to see if it works.
If it still doesn't work, it's probably broken. Head to home depot.

It's obviously jammed. If you have to unhook it, use your car's jack to support it. Makes removal and reinstallation a breeze.

If you can rotate the wheel and it's still not running, may be time for a new unit. Unless it's super tough to spin, the motor should be able to clear it pretry easily.
It literally takes 30 seconds to pull it and inspect it.

If you end up having to replace it, check the flange at the under side of the sink. If it needs to be replaced, you will need some plumber's putty for the reinstallation. Don't forget the putty!!

They don't sell special gaskets for these things? I've never had to install one so I don't know.

I've used a ratchet wrench with an extension to come down through the top of the sink, grab the bolt in the center and turn the wheel loose. Sometimes that's all it takes.

You have to make a rope-like gasket around the flange of the sink with the plumber's putty. It is nothing to it. The can of putty is less than $5 and you only use maybe a dime of putty.
The hardest thing about changing out a garbage disposal is holding the new unit up and securing it to the flange of the sink. You basically have several moving parts that are to interlock while holding the bulk of the unit up in a small confined space.

Aside from the normal spoons and stuff, once had mine jammed up with a BB out of a goose. Took forever to find it

Thought it was counterclockwise... Unplug it and stick your hand down in it and see if anything is stopping it up...
Edt: after reading through the other responses, I agree with hitting the red reset button also!
