So that's it? Now we wait for the decision?

THIS. I agree with your assessment on the 2 that are obviously opposed and made up their mind already . When McCallum dropped that nugget about SG putting in more than they are getting out.. I hope people caught that.

BR attorney basically admitted that this is about taking funds from BR and they would need to cut city funds in order to make up for what St. George would take away.

Forgive my ignorance, but how does St. George forming its own city take money away from the city of Baton Rouge?

Because St. George tax money is massive per capita. Compared to the neighboring areas

I believe so. How long usually does it take for them do render a decision?

The sales tax revenue collected for the St George area currently goes into the general parish fund. It can be used for anything in the parish and by their attorneys own admission it is used for things outside of the SG area like grass cutting in BR.

The taxes generated from residents and businesses in the "St. George" area carry Baton Rouge right now. That's why SWB says it is racist to leave, because the black people don't pay any taxes and Baton Rouge would be fricked without a small portion of the population paying for everything.

Maybe so, but how does that take money away from the city? Purchases made inside the city limits of Baton Rouge would still be taxed the same correct?

St George being unincorporated means any tax money from there goes into the EBR parish general fund before being spent.

By law, 50% of the general fund is spent on BRPD and BRFD. BRPD only covers within the city limits of BR and BRFD has definite limits which don’t include all of BR.

Short version - the parish as a whole is paying a shite ton of money for shitty police protection in other parts of the parish.

so unincorporated Baton Rouge pays for BRPD? I thought they only paid for the sheriff

And I thought unincorporated BR paid for BRFD bc that’s who has the EMS services?

Or is that extra money that is going to their funds?

Unincorporated BR directly pays for the sheriff and all other tax money not previously earmarked goes into the parish general fund.

And BRPD and BRFD get 50% of the parish general fund by law before anyone else gets a taste.

Central would beg the differ considering the legal fight BR put up to block their incorporation.

so this is that BR is afraid to lose - gotcha - I live in the city of BR, so I have no dog in this fight but ppl voted for this, so it should be as the ppl voted

And I agree.

Legally, BR CAN sue to block based on “disparate impact” since that is part of the incorporation law, but I don’t think they will get a lot of sympathy if they win.

“We can’t afford our city if we don’t tax a bunch of people we don’t provide services for” doesnt play well in public.

BR would lose funding and have to cut from other public services in order to maintain what they're currently doing. Even if those services don't affect the St. George limits, they would still have to make cuts.

If they can’t afford it, they shouldn’t have it.
