yet, virtually every US born player playing in college or the pro's played travel/tournament ball. It's just not that big of a deal. Neither is it for girls on dance/cheer teams. Nor is it for kids getting lessons to play music, golf, or tennis. BTW, sorry your kid got cut from tryouts.

And why is that? Couldn't be because cliques of parents want their kids to be on the same team with their best buddies every year?

Couldn't be because the emphasis is on winning meaningless games and not on skill development?

Rec ball would be great if the select kids parents weren't chasing glory.

shite I coached all of my kids teams all the way up too about 12 years old. Not travel teams just rec and all star teams. Fwiw they played travel ball we had a good times and we were a close knit group but honestly if I had to do it all over again I would have let my kids do different sports and we would have done more family vacations together. Now that my kids are older and not professional ball players(sorry OT i failed)we just laugh at some of the stories of me as a coach and them on my teams. I ain't very proud of some of the moments but I can laugh with them now. Yes I was an idiot on the field sometimes

My son was held back, but yep...the same thing, he’ll finish U13 and then move into school ball. Play when they play and do other sports. The reverse of what everyone else does.

Focusing on one sport when you’re young really gets you exposed to pressure that will help down the road. They go into this spring as the #1 ranked team in the state. There’s going to be some high drama. Then, it’s all over until state competition in high school.

No, held him back in K. He’s a ‘summer boy’ and DNGAF about school. Still doesn’t. It’s never helped him with sports since it’s by birth year. It may down road.

I think there is a misconception regarding travel ball. Just like anything else, there are different levels!!

Me and a few other guys have started our own travel team this year for our 7/8 year olds.

We played Dixie, and became really close with the group of families during All Stars.

We decided we wanted to keep the boys together, and just have more control of practice and coaching. Unlike Dixie which is an absolute crap shoot!!!

We are only going to play local tournaments once or twice a month TOPS!!

Right now my kid is playing basketball, and then will also play soccer during the spring while we are playing “Travel” Ball.

What does this have to do w/ the lack of fundamental skills w/ 85% of kids in the rec. league ?

Again, how do you develop skill when 10 of the kids on the rec. team don't have the skill of tee ballers ?

I agree too many chase wins and positions, but rec. ball in this day and age would never be "great". It's not 1983, when 10 of the 12 kids were fundamentally skilled. Not to mention less than half show up for practices. I wish the rec. leagues were not the way they are but it's the reality.

Race has nothing to do with it. The problem is the rec. leagues are horrendous when it comes to fundamentals. You may have 2 kids on a 12 member team that can catch a ball, much less have basic fundamental skills. Kids show up at 8-10 years of age and have NEVER played the game before. If your kid has been playing, or has fundamental skills, he will get ZERO out of a typical rec. league. The only way to play the game the right way, and learn/enhance fundamental skills, is play with kids of same talent or better and have fundamental coaching/teaching of the game. Kids don't play outside any longer and all of these rec. league kids are so far behind it is a lost cause.

Nonsense

It's all about the coaching a kid receives coupled with his God given talent and his desire to play and play enthusiastically.

That's all more important than the competition he plays against.

You can provide a kid with all the instruction in the world and put him against all star competition every day and if he doesn't have ability then he probably won't make a good high school team.

No doubt the better the league the better experience it is. But it's better to go watch s 6-4 game than 20-0. It's better to see kids hit, girls and pitch than walk, make errors and look bad.

But things like travel coaches pitch is crazy. You can stay in town and do just as well.

Soccer is the same rabbit hole, that’s what my boy plays. We almost did the same for soccer, but there are ‘leagues” of sort which prevent teams from playing. There’s another club in town, and they block my sons club from playing tournaments that would qualify for regionals. Luckily this happens other places, so this club competes with that group...if we started our own both local clubs would block them. Too fricked up.

It’ll be fun. Nights at the hotels are quite the hoot.

If you never compete against equal or better talent you will fall WAY BEHIND.

To start with, I'm not sure there has been an 8U world series for a real long time. Secondly, there have been a ton of MLB players play on tv in the little league world series and that is just one of the 100+ 12U leagues that take it a little too far. But I do see where you're trying to go.

Braylon, Braydon and Jaxx had to play Travel ball so their dads could coach together and make out the lineup card.

I don't think this is accurate. I wll google this, but I am pretty sure I have watched baseball games in which they have shown a few players when they performed in the little league world series.

With that said, I do think that the majority of MLB players didn't play travel ball.

It all comes down to genetics. Either you have them or you don't. You can be a decent athlete and have a nice little high school career. At the end of the day, try a few different sports, and take trips with your kids that aren't geared around tournaments.
