I post about this sale every year it seems, and there are always several people who didn't know about it.

Since AE gets so much praise on this board, it's worth a look for those who need new stuff. For those that don't know, their seconds are usually pretty indistinguishable from the first quality stuff, so in my experience you usually get about 200 bucks off shoes without any flaws noticeable unless on close inspection.

Just scrolling quickly it seems the 2nds are priced at or even a little higher than when I get my AE shoes just on sale.

Is that the case?

Depends on the sale. The seconds sale is about 70-100 dollars off the normal seconds pricing. So first quality Fifth Avenues are usually 399, seconds are 299, and these are 195.

It's possible you've seen regular ones on outlet for cheaper (and particularly if you're shopping in outlet stores), but I don't recall ever seeing Park/Fifth Avenues for 195, or Strands for 229, other than these second sales.

Now it's probably true that on sale, you might get those "first quality" shoes for less than the "regular" seconds price at times, if that's what you're asking.

I just got 5th avenues around fathers day for $245 (regular quality). There was a big sale going on for like a week.

They are breaking in on me terribly though. It's not my first pair of AE's, but they are killing my left foot. Think the cap toe or something is causing the front to be stiff and crease hard in one spot on my toes compared to my others. Hoping the leather softens and it stops.

I've heard people bemoan declining quality in AEs, but I haven't had that experience yet. I do think some of the lasts they're using suck, which is why I never buy any of their new stuff and stick to the pretty well tested styles.

If you want to go even cheaper, check out ebay user dabondo1, LINK, I've offered around 60% of his asking price and had it accepted. Good way to try new styles.

They just had a big sale for Father's Day, which is why some may think they've seen better pricing. Got a pair of Walnut Lake Bluffs for $280.

I'm thinking about picking up a pair of 5th Avenues in Dark Chili during this sale. Just nervous about how big the defects are.

I was in the same boat and sprung for the non-defect Acheson loafers (during that Father's Day Sale, of course)... after 3 wears there were scuffs and scratches all over them. They wouldn't even be considered for "factory seconds" in current condition. From now on I'll do seconds and save money.

I haven't either. They are my everyday work shoes and have always held up great.

I have a pair of dark chili 5th avenues and they are beautiful. I get compliments on them every time I wear them. And, FWIW, I have never been able to find anything wrong with the factory seconds.

I don't do the outlets just the store either in the woodlands or Houston memorial city.

I usually wait until the $150 off sale so that makes sense that I am seeing better deals.

Love the AE shoes though.

I took advantage of this sale last year when you posted. I went into the local store to get the proper fit then bought online. I told them what I was doing and they were cool with it.

Thanks for the ends up
