I wonder if we can put stem cells in my bong and smoke it. Could be a new kind of high.

Cord blood banking is the process of collecting and storing your baby’s umbilical cord stem cells for potential medical use.

Now this seems like a lucrative business model that I could get into.

Cord blood storage tank:

That'll be $1500

We passed on it.

If we need stem cells, I'll get them from Ted Williams' frozen head.

Decided it wasn't worth it; the scenarios where it might be helpful just seemed too unlikely to be worth the money. It's basically useless for the kid, since the conditions would be present in the cord blood as well, so you're just banking it for a possible future sibling that might have a condition. Since we had no family histories of any of the diseases that might be treated, it just didn't seem worth it.

Look into delayed cord clamping instead.

Not sure if you realize this but you've answered your own question....

but i haven't heard one success story about someone that kept the cord blood and actually used it to save their kid's life.

There you go.

We donated it....from what we read, if your child ever had to have some sort of procedure that required this, the cells from donated cord blood would be the same no matter who it came from.

I'm assuming it doesn't cost anything to donate it? They pass the cost onto the family that would be receiving it?

Yep, even if you keep it for a sibling, stem cells can be extracted from blood at any time. Stem cell donation is common and has replaced bone marrow donation in many cases.

We did it after #2 was born. Mrs. dog felt the same way about it.
Of course this was 12 years ago and I do not remember spending 1500 bucks for it.

We have never used it and hopefully wont have to.

Maybe talk to the hospital about delayed cord clamping. There is research out there about this and it helping the baby. We did it and i don't believe we were charged anything extra.
