The new Malibu hybrid is an amazing car.
Honestly can't go wrong with either Fusion or Malibu. They have both developed very good cars in that segment although the newer Malibu probably has an edge.
I think I prefer both of them to the hideous new Camry. Not sure what Toyota was thinking with that.

the Malibu may look better but there is no way I'd buy a gm right now.

Camry or Accord are the right choices here, even optima/sedona over a ford or chevy

The only Malibu that matters

Fusion vs malibu
The Malibu is a little nicer and newer than the Fusion. It is quieter on the highway. I've rented both (along with the Passat, Altima, and Camry) and the higher end Malibu with the bigger turbocharged engine is very nice. IMO the Passat and Malibu are the better options. The Fusion is still pretty good though - arguably better than the larger Taurus, which itself is horribly designed.
The Japanese brands make good cars, but they all look weird and have flaws, such as an outdated infotainment or an awful CVT transmission. I'd buy American or German right now in that segment. I think the Passat is slightly larger than the Malibu but smaller than the Impala.
The new Impala is also a legitimately good car if you need a huge interior, massive trunk, and a bigger engine.

The Malibu is a very good car. New ones look great.
But I fricking hate the way they advertise it.

All of Chevy's commercials are terrible right now and it seems like they've doubled down on it.

I think most of these are sold to cab companies these days.

Yep.
It's a shame because the new Equinox, Cruze, and Malibu are very good cars. I'm actually thinking about a new turbodiesel Equinox for my wife.

10 years ago I never thought I'd say this, but the Malibu is actually a decent looking car today.
What throws me off is I never thought GM would take styling cues from Hyundai and Kia. The new Malibu looks strikingly similar to the Optima especially.

We bought the Malibu for my daughter after graduation. It was down to those two. The Malibu had a better ride. Fusion had better features. The Malibu was less expensive.
My daughter loves it. I don't think you can go wrong for a nice economical midsize car

Fusion looks better.
I would get an Accord or Camry.

The New one is gorgeous, imo.

Kia/Hyundai made a hire from Audi to do their styling and it shows. They look very handsome and tasteful.
The Malibu and Cruze RS both look more aggressive and "American" to me, but without being brash. I don't know who designed them, but they did a pretty good job IMO.

LOL of course it's close. Truth is they are both good solid cars if a mid sized front wheel drive car is what you are in the market for. OP just buy the one you prefer , and forget about "which is the better vehicle" that's a lame argument every single damn time given the qualifty of today's cars, you could literally go buy a Kia and drive it 100K miles with little to no problems, let alone the Chevy or Ford.
The days of "this brand is better than that brand" are long gone.

The advantage that you used to get buying a Camry over the Ford, Hyundai, Nissan, or Chevrolet has largely evaporated in this particular segment.
The Malibu is a newer design, so it has an edge currently. Next year the Accord will be the latest and greatest. The Fusion is probably up for a redesign the year after that. They seem to run the models 6-7 years with a "mild refresh" every 2-3 years.

My company had two Fusion's. One went for 215,000 miles before blowing a head gasket. Which was prob the fault of the person driving it for not checking when engine light came on for no water.
The other is still going strong at 180,000 plus miles.
I have not driven either one, but I've always thought the styling was pretty good.
