Interstate commerce is regulated by the feds.

Yes, it's stretching the law... but I can see it.

I don't get how you can put tolls on I-10. An alternate route or loop I get but tolling a major coast to coast interstate feels absurd. Toll the bypass to pay for the new bridge on 10.

It's semantics but you could swap the I-10 and I-210 routes. Then build a new bridge on what would now be I-210 and toll that.

Nah, when it falls into the water, the feds will pay for it.

Build a new bridge and a loop and toll the shite out of those things. Or at least just a loop.

I'd gladly pay the annual fee to have the electronic pass on my car like the Sunshine Pass.

are there tolls on an interstate HWY anywhere else?

Most of the interstate toll roads in existence were grandfathered in when the interstate system started. They were previously turnpikes. However, most of these roads - which still collect tolls - receive very little, if any, federal money.

With a few exceptions, generally new construction on interstates can't be tolled. Katy Freeway is allowed because it's not completely tolled - only certain lanes. Otherwise, we would need to either have federal law changed, or get an exception granted, to toll the new bridge.

Now, the new bridge is in such pisspoor condition that we actually might have a good chance of getting a waiver.

I'd be fine with the model they use in Texas. Some times I took the toll roads, sometimes I didn't. There was always a free option, however, that option usually took longer.

The maintenance of the interstate highway system is the burden of the state and the states should be able to raise funds with tolls, within reason.

And to what someone else said, the entire stretch wouldn’t be tolled. If you enter or exit the state via I-10, you pay the toll. It’s not like you’d meter every single off ramp.

Exactly.

All the poors that drive 10 below the speed limit in the left lane with their shitty cars won't be on my hypothetical toll loop.

It would also ban 18 wheelers.

Hahah US 75 stays filled to the brim while the Tollways here in DFW minus 4 hours a day are free-flowing.

That seems counterintuitive. Once the new bridge is complete, you've got little reason to take the bypass, which is supposed to be funding the new bridge.

It all depends upon how much the toll is, and how much additional time it takes you to take the bypass.

If it's a buck toll, most people are just going to pay it.

Personally, I'd put the toll booth I-10 westbound only at mile marker #1. Just before the state line. Let everyone who is leaving the state to go to Texas pay the toll.

Can you imagine the traffic lines created by Toll Booth Lanes.

Might better set them up in Iowa or Laccasine?

Pay by mail/online tolling exists all over the country.

It does, but look at how many people on this board talk about how it's dumb to pay camera tickets. You think they are going to pay a $2 toll bill?

We need an attitude change here if this is ever going to work.

Well camera tickets are a farce. An attempt to make a criminal act a civil fine.

Pay by plate tolling is purely a civil arrangement between a (typically) private tolling entity and the individual using their road.

Most of the complaints on this board don't take that legal issue into effect. It's just people being cheap.
