This is true and that's why I mentioned other states. Don't fool yourself to think that it can't happen in LA where money mismanagement is the order of the day.

I'd like to see LA improve roads by utilizing toll roads similar to how Houston does....but I don't support tolls on the interstate...especially on I-10, arguably the most important east-west highway in the entire US.

I pass through Lake Charles en route to Texas maybe twice a year, so a toll on that bridge would have minimal impact on me personally. I just don't think the federal interstate system should have tolls....except maybe if they want to widen it to 8 lanes and have the far left lane be a tolled "fast lane", then thats fine.

Make the truckers use the right lane and only charge them.

Theres a court case going on in Rhode Island right now about truck only tolls. From everything I've heard the courts are about to put a ban on it.

Also, putting a toll on trucks just gets passed along to the consumer - might as well just raise a tax because that's essentially the same thing.

To be fair in this state they got rid of the CCC and Sunshine Bridge tolls once they were paid for.

Not without a fight.

The second bridge's debt would be retired, and tolls would expire, at the end of 2012. Nonetheless, officials put a 20-year renewal on the Nov. 6, 2012, ballot, setting off months of debate. Politicians, business activists and others campaigned for the extension, saying tolls provided a dedicated source of revenue

Interstate 80 from Illinois to Ohio is tolled, same for i76 through PA. I35 through Kansas is tolled, i44 in Oklahoma, and practically every road north of NYC is tolled.

Theres has been rumblings of North Carolina putting up tolls on i95 but businesses along there are putting up a big fight to stop it.

Much prefer tolls over increasing gas tax.
I can see both sides.

The gas tax effects the entire state, but so to does a shitty I-10, so the gas tax is reasonable.

The toll impacts people who actually use the bridge, which is also a fair way to fund it.

I'm not sure either are necessary if the state was efficient with its money, but that's another story.

Don't tolls only exist until it's paid for? At least up to that point, it sounds like a perfectly fine way to pay for the cost.

A federal ban? I don’t see how that would be constitutional. Interstates were federally funded but the states own, operate, and maintain them. I don’t see how the federal government can say we can’t put a toll on trucks...they put the greatest strain on an infrastructure this broke arse state can’t rebuild faster than it deteriorates.

The nice thing about a toll is after the bridge is paid for elected officials have more money to steal

Try taking I-55 to 294 around Chicago to Milwaukee. There are about 8 different tolls to pay. And frick having change, you better bring a wallet. It cost probably 15 bucks one way, and that was 7 years ago. God knows what it costs now.

You realize that’s something people have to register, load funds and receive equipment for, right? If you just sent everyone a bill in the mail you’d lose money. And only the people that used it regularly would do that. I live 45 minutes north of Lake Charles and I wouldn’t sign up for it. I never go across that bridge

You aren’t forward thinking enough. What I’d do is skim off the top, say that the tolls aren’t bringing in as much as we hoped and then raise the toll so there would be even more money to steal.

Louisiana needs like 10 toll roads/bridges and we'd be able to fund a ton of much needed infrastructure.

I don't get how you can put tolls on I-10. An alternate route or loop I get but tolling a major coast to coast interstate feels absurd. Toll the bypass to pay for the new bridge on 10.
