Slavery actually happening today is relevant. Slavery that happened many generations ago isn't. Sorry.

The slave import trade was banned by Congress in 1808, but the slaves who were already here reproduced, plus there was smuggling.

The total slave population in the South eventually reached 4,000,000. By way of comparison, the total population of Mississippi today is less than 3,000,000. That's a lot of slaves.

That number only includes direct shipments from Africa to North America.
Not included: the indirect trade via the Caribbean.

Oh, and the fact that those people had children for generations over hundreds of years after arriving- all who suffered under slavery. So the number is in the tens of millions, Einstein.

Yes, many aspects of the Atlantic slave trade are ignored or distorted to support Leftist narratives, but your counter argument is dumb.

We have no involvement there either, so we’re just as much on the hook for reparations there.

Actually it does. The fact of slavery is unfortunate. The history of slavery is a happy one for the blacks whose ancestors came here. Nowhere on earth is a better place to be black than the USA. Their race is a literal “ Get out of jail free card” here.
As for us? We have paid trillions in reparations and more coming as our schools fail, cities crash, jails fill and elections are stolen.
But you keep worrying about those Blacks.

I would not call this a "fun fact", but a "horrible fact"

Also, slaves weren't exclusively shipped from Africa. Slaves were forced to have sex and have children and that wound up being a significant percentage of the slave population

according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the New World. Only about 388,000 were shipped to North America. That’s right: a tiny percentage.

Considering Africans were used like human cattle and bred in the states, of course the numbers physically taken from Africa would be low. Also, the world population is orders of magnitude larger now than it was during the trans-atlantic slave trade.

I'm not really sure what the point of this thread is, but the reasoning here is faulty.

The point is that America is persistently described as an oppressive place to live. That we are in dire need of social justice. That we are infected with "whiteness" and that BIPOCs are under constant threat of annihilation. That our economic system was intentionally structure to reinforce white people. That we need a systemic overhaul. That we are uncultured, uncouth, and immoral. That our history books need to be erased and rewritten. That our educational system needs to be used to reprogram nearly half of the country's population.

But the fact remains and will remain for a long time that people of color around the globe perpetuate absolutely vile, disgusting, and oppressive regimes compared to first world Western nations that were founded by white people. Everything you read about what's bad in America can be found in exponentially worse forms in countries around the world.

If you don’t know what the point of the thread is, how do you know the reasoning is faulty?

I'll never understand why people are so defensive about teaching nuanced American history. Criticizing institutions like slavery and the genocide of native Americans is an important component to being an informed American citizen.

I should say: It seems like the point of this thread is to imply colonial slavery "wasn't that bad" based off this modern standard, which would be totally asinine. That's why I hope it's not the reason, because this reasoning makes no sense.
