From a psychological standpoint, why is "outrage" so popular?

I found myself getting into this feedback loop on cable news and the internet for a few years. Then I acknowledged its damning effects and have been able to ween myself off of it.

I'll admit that it was tough. Internet outrage produces some sort of temporary endorphin or feel-good chemical release that can be subtly addictive.

Outrage has basically surpassed football as America's favorite national pastime, which previously took over for baseball.

It's not. A dozen people like something on Twitter and it's considered "outrage". Need to generate web clicks somehow

People like to believe their opinion matters. The internet gave every Tom and hairy dick around a voice.

Just because you can be heard doesn't mean you should be listened to.

The outrage and victim cycle is the “in” thing. People just need something to identify with because they’re generally just worthless and unhappy.

It's basically a billion dollar industry at this point, and there's a never-ending of supply of the stuff that's constantly replenishing itself.

I really do think that to some extent this can be attributed to declining church attendance in America. People still need to find a sense of identity and align themselves with a greater cause and greater good, and that place used to be church.

Correct. Its media trying to convince people there is outrage.

And now it’s TikTok.

I also blame a lot churches for this. Many have turned into grifters who barely support their community.

Social media exacerbates it. You see a Facebook post or a tweet that pisses you off, and you respond, you get a whole bunch more content that pisses you off.

Eta
Beyond it being obvious, the reason I know this is I still have a bunch of Oregon and Washington douchebags on the X feed because of the Heisman wars that we won decisively.

I have a liberal friend who is on FB every day wailing about how mistreated the Palestinians are. I noticed that the supporting comments have largely gone away.

The tee shirt that the Steelers coach decided to wear to the game yesterday was the last thing I thought about before I went to sleep last night and the first thing I thought about this morning. I'm still pissed!!!

The demographic that you're talking about is pretty much all women & men who never go outside. COVID escalated it by making everyone stay inside & fear for their lives.

It’s a combination of narcissism and the desire to feel “right” and “special”.
