What would you do if you were the parent? No job, hasn't been employed in over five years and lives at home rent free. Where do you draw the line between helping and enabling?

This is a good reason to never have kids.

Gonna need more details on the exact illness

Is he on disability? What kind of mental illness? Is he compliant with doctors orders and taking his medication?
These are all important factors in determining if he's really sick or just riding the gravy train.

What can you do? I don’t think you realize how tough the simplest things can be when you have a mental illness. You have a child, they’re your responsibility until they are capable of taking care of themselves. If they’re never capable, then there’s really nothing else you can do but help them, morally speaking.

Well someone with a "severe" mental illness may not be able to be employed.
Someone with a "severe" mental illness with no job (because he/she cannot have a job) cannot pay rent.
Someone with a "severe" mental illness is not being enabled.
You must not know or have never dealt with someone with a "severe" mental illness. It is a challenge.

Yeah he's on disability right now and has bi polar II. I'm just trying to be supportive as a friend in need. We met through a board game community.

He actually started a thread earlier. He's having problems with his cousin being in charge of his trust. I'd get him some help.

What kind of mental illness are we talking about and what's the financial situation?

I'm bipolar II. With medication its very manageable. Trileptal really helped me out. Before that, I had months where I just couldn't move or accomplish the smallest task. Since, I got on the right meds, I've had one of the best string of years I can remember.

Mental Illness is kind of a broad diagnosis. Is their mental illness preventing them from being about to get a job, live on their own, etc?

If you don’t mind me asking. What kind of episodes have you had being bipolar. I’m trying to figure out if I should get my wife diagnosed.

Risk seeking behavior, compulsive gambling, eating and sex.
It's not as severe as Bipolar I where they are a legit danger to themselves and others, but I've zeroed out my bank account and ended up in jail more than a few times when I was still undiagnosed.
The depressed side is just your typical listlessness, suicidal ideation, feeling worthless, inability to start or finish even the simplest tasks -- like cleaning your house.
In between, there were times I was completely "normal" but those periods were always on the way up or the way down.

Go to a Dr and get put on disability, half the state is on some type of support.
