severe mental illness

If he is really has a severe mental illness, I have no issue. You should also feel like a terrible human being if you think the parents are "enabling" this because of something they did. Theres a long list of legit mental illnesses that keep someone from working. Tourettes, schizophrenia, autism, Downs, etc.

OTOH, if he is depressed because he cant get a job thats something different.

Which is it?

Eta: I am not familiar with BP II, unfortunately.

It's not as severe as Bipolar I where they are a legit danger to themselves and others, but I've zeroed out my bank account and ended up in jail more than a few times when I was still undiagnosed.
Sounds like you know how to party

I am.

Bipolar II isn't completely crippling like the other ones you mentioned. If he is actually seeking treatment and taking his meds, there's no reason he shouldn't be out looking for a job; however, if he was diagnosed, isn't doing anything about it and just using that diagnosis as a crutch, his parents need to put their foot down or in his arse.

Also, what kind of education does he have? Any skills?

I know someone like this only it's been 10 years since he's worked. He lives with his parents, rarely leaves the house and has nothing of his own at nearly 40 years old. He claims to have anxiety, but I think it's b.s. Somehow he has managed to trick a woman into being into a relationship with him, so I guess I'm the idiot. Anyway, there's no helping someone like that. I've tried. Trust me.

OMG, this might be my cousin. After HS he drifted around, odd jobs here and there having left college after a few weeks. When his Dad died he moved home, maybe 30 years ago, and hasn't left. He has never worked, or cut grass, or did anything remotely productive. His Mom took care of him 100% -washing clothes, cooking, everything. He doesn't know how to work the microwave, I swear. I don't think he's ever been to the grocery store. His Mom had to drive him to his appointments, eye doctor, dentist etc. Despite his mother's claims of him being unable to care for himself, he manages to maintain a rigorous and expensive deer and duck hunting habit.
His Mom died 2 years ago and every penny of her estate is spent insuring he is well provided for. By that I mean a new 4 wheel drive truck every 5 years, a maid, whatever his fatass needs.
My aunt said he just wasn't right in the head. Nobody believes that.

This type of stuff shouldn't piss me off but it does. My brain is a bit broken, and it runs in the family. My brother, mother and grandmother all had the same problems to varying degrees.

We all could easily have given in. But we didn't. We all graduated from a university. We all got jobs. We all made an attempt at life over and over. Even at my worst when I became a raging alcoholic because it was the only way I knew to medicate myself, I kept a job and forced myself to get out of bed every morning and keep trying.

Hate people that just give up and expect to be taken care of.

Just nut up and off yourself if that's what you call a life.
