Contrary to popular belief the risk of even first cousins having a child with a genetically related defect is very small. For a couple that is unrelated the risk of a genetic defect is 3-4 in 100 births, for first cousins producing a child the risk increase to around 4-5 per 100 births. Compared to first cousins, you and your girlfriend could be considered basically unrelated, and you are also legal to marry in any state.
