My wife's grandfather passed away a few years ago followed by his wife in 2017, so we got a bunch of his antique furniture, watches, and some other heirlooms and keepsakes he had aquired over his 90 years. Today, my mother-in-law gave me a framed 1863 American Express stock certificate signed by Henry Wells and William Fargo. Her grandfather was president of several banks in New York.

It's in almost mint condition as I'm sure he paid a hefty price for it, the man was loaded. It's for 20 shares which at the time was $500 a share.

I'm sure there's no actual stock value in it, but I was looking at other auctions around the country and one's that were in way worse condition were selling for about $2,000.

My question is, I would like to get it appraised but I don't know where in town to have it done. Any suggestions or ideas?

Tl:dr I have a really old stock certificate I want to get appraised in the Baton Rouge or Nola area.

Do you mind if I call in a buddy of mine to check it out?

FWIW, if I was given a piece of paper that stated that I had tangible value of 30 grand if sold, I wouldn’t just assume this.

Expert: I'd say a fair value would be about $20,000.

You: Yeah it's going to take up a lot of shelf space, and you really have to have the right buyer. Best I can do is $17

Cliff here, stock certificate expert. What we have here is a cheap replica certificate. Looks like it was probably printed around 1992-95. Worth less than the paper it's printed on

He bought it as a collectible I believe. The owner is a "J Henry Edsall" which is no one in the family as far as we checked so I don't know how we could prove ownership unfortunately.

Cohen & Sons in New Orleans would be where I'd start.
