A former Broward County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested Tuesday on seven counts of child neglect of a child, three counts of culpable negligence, and one count of perjury.

The arrest of 56-year-old Scot Peterson comes after a 15-month investigation into the actions of law enforcement following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) High School shooting on February 14, 2018.

Peterson was the school resource officer at MSD High School during the school shooting.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), the investigation shows Peterson refused to investigate the source of gunshots, retreated during the active shooting while victims were being shot and directed other law enforcement who arrived on scene to stay 500 feet away from the building.

“The FDLE investigation shows former Deputy Peterson did absolutely nothing to mitigate the MSD shooting that killed 17 children, teachers and staff and injured 17 others,” said FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen. “There can be no excuse for his complete inaction and no question that his inaction cost lives.”

During the investigation, FDLE agents interviewed 184 witnesses, reviewed hours of video surveillance, and wrote 212 investigate reports – totaling more than 800 hours on the case to determine the actions of law enforcement as they responded to the school shooting.

Peterson has been arrested and booked into the Broward County Main Jail.

Guess we can blame his idiot parents for spelling his name like that.

Good. fricking coward. While we are at it, we need to address the SCOTUS decision that says police don’t have a duty to protect the public. I get why the decision was written but it was way too broad.

The charges, besides perjury, are just neglect and negligence, which if you're a paid SRO of a school and you shite the bed in a way that probably led to more kids getting killed, I'm all for it. It's not like they are charging him with any form of manslaughter.

no way to prove he could've prevented any deaths or injuries. He should be fired and ridiculed but come on charging him with crimes is stupid.

I actually like that decision because it's an easy answer when some gun controll lib talks about how no one "needs" guns.

Wasn’t there a Supreme Court case thst said police do not have the constitutional duty of protecting citizens. Not defending this scumbag but maybe he has a defense for some of this legally. Obviously not counts of perjury though.

This is likely more of a CYA to lawsuits than actually wanting to convict these people.

Common tactic, unfortunately, when government agencies are sued.

This guy is incompetent as hell, and being civilly culpable is understandable, but criminal charges seem overboard.
