That gasp was woefully inadequate for the magnitude of the event.

Was Anders the pilot? He must have been well into his 80s.
Edit: He was 90 years old.

He went out at 90 doing what he loved. We could all be so fortunate, I guess.

He went out hitting the water at 90 degrees

That’s a real photo. He definitely went to the moon.

Jim Lovell is the only member of the Apollo 8 crew still alive.
Man, what an accomplishment that was at the time. We sent men to circle the moon.
Frank Borman once said he might not have went if he knew his wife's true feelings. Susan Borman was 100% convinced they were going to their deaths when that rocket blasted off. Not out of fear, but out of love and respect for her, and her feelings.
The reading of Genesis on Christmas Eve.

Was he trying a loop, and was just too low?

At 90 chances are good that it was deliberate.

The image of the Apollo 8 Earthrise is usually presented as seen in the original post. However, the astronauts onboard actually saw it like this:
If you listen to the onboard recordings from Apollo 8, when Earthrise occurs, you can hear Jim Lovell getting excited, and fumbling around trying to find the camera. You then hear Bill Anders say "Settle down, Lovell!" Then they take a photo for the ages.

Gotta be a medical emergency. Guy was 90 and still flying solo.

I don't think so, looks like he was doing a loop way too low and just barely didn't pull out of it. Wasn't like he crashed straight into the ground.
That's a lot if Gs for anyone to pull, especially a 90 year old. May have passed out

I’m no doctor but I don’t think you alway die instantly from a heart attack. It’s a poetic way for him to go. It’s shocking they allow people that old to fly.

Another voice that could expose the Moon Landing and Moon missions fakery silenced suspiciously and no one will think it's obviously a sign of something!
