Obviously Spanish. French and German seem to be the next big two.

Do they just not teach Arabic and Mandarin because of lack of teachers and it would mind frick students who are 16?

Big high schools offer those. It's hard to find teachers to fill it and students who request it.

Listened to a freakenomics podcast about foreign language in schools.

Apparently approx 12% of all class time in high school is on a foreign language.

99% of students who take foreign language courses in high school and college have no ability to hold a conversation in the language.

The only students who are able to retain a second language are those who practice in the home with family.

What a fricking waste.

i agree. I thiknk more computer science, maybe money management courses, or just classes that teach some real life scenarios that our youth will see in life.

Probably. But I don't judge my opinions off Facebook. One of the worst sites ever.

My son started taking Mandarin as a HS sophomore. He is now a sophomore in college and it is his minor.... job security.

Very hard language tho....

Language should be taught in elementary school, not high school.

It's sad. Travel just about anywhere else "half educated" in the world and the students speak two languages fluently.

2 years of foreign language is a joke. I wish I had taken it every year from kindergarten up.

I learned Latin for 2 years in high school. I actually highly encourage it since it will drastically increase your vocabulary in many languages.

It's only a waste if you don't actually use it after taking the class. Like anything you learn, if you don't regularly use it you'll likely lose it. That's on the student, not the system. Especially in this day and age when having conversational ability in another language opens a lot of doors for your in the job market.

I would have much preferred more technical classes than fricking Spanish: welding, carpentry, auto, etc.

Life skills >>> bs class

Now if I actually learned more than puedo ir albano, it would be ok
