Ford Idles 8 Factories in Mexico, Canada, and the US

The factories in Mexico, Canada, and the US that are being idled or reduced to one shift make the bulk of Ford's products for North America:
Ford Escape/Lincoln Corsair
Ford Edge/Lincoln Nautilus
Ford Explorer/Lincoln Aviator
Ford Mustang Mach E
Ford F-150
Ford F-250, F-350, and F-450
Ford Transit Van
Ford Lightning

The one bright spot is that the Mexican factory that makes the Ford Maverick compact pickup is still at full capacity for the time being.
Over the past 20 years, the Detroit automakers have been moving to a less integrated production method with more reliance on overseas suppliers. When will the CEO's of those companies start facing repercussions for putting their employers in such a precarious position to begin with?

Production at factories in Michigan, Chicago and in Cuautitlan, Mexico will be suspended. In Kansas City, production of its F-150 pickup trucks will be idled while one shift will run for production of its Transit vans.
The Detroit automaker will also run a single shift or a reduced schedule at its factories in Dearborn, Kentucky, and Louisville while removing overtime at its Oakville factory in Canada.
All changes will be in place for the week beginning Feb. 7. -Reuters

Ford should have waited to drop the new Bronco. I don't believe I have ever seen a bigger new vehicle launch disaster.

Ordered new F150 in December and I'll be lucky to have it by July.

No doubt.

This isn't just microchips.
Suppliers in the midwestern states like Illinois and Michigan have to send people home for days after an exposure. Or they even have to go home to take care of their kids if there is an exposure at their school.
These covid policies are wrecking the supply of everything right now because of the absolute insanity that some of these governors and school boards were pushing a month ago.

Little to no f-150s on the lot... but they make this move? I'm confused

They had the bad luck of bringing a brand new vehicle out in an environment where they have supply issues for almost everything....and staffing issues at their own assembly plants.
But they also shot themselves in the foot by taking 4 years too long to bring it to production, and there are still issues with features and parts that were not fully baked. Despite all the issues that they have had, I still think that it's one of the best executed Ford products in recent history from a design and creativity standpoint.
They deserve to sell a lot of Broncos, and they just can't build them consistently enough to take advantage of all the fanfare.

OK, so supply chain shortage is why they can't build and sell vehicles, but their EV's are going to turn things around?
Are these EVs falling out of the sky already assembled?

It's our punishment for 2016.

My Uncle works at the truck plant here in Louisville and retirement can’t come fast enough for him. They have several guys who have retired during the shutdowns over the last two years who they’re not replacing which seems to indicate they’re getting ready to start cutting back staff and offering severance packages.

They'll add to their production capacity in Mexico and scale it back in the midwest. That's what they've been doing for years.
And frankly I don't see why Louisiana folks should care about Ford unless they earn money on the sales side. With the exception of Louisville, Ford has skipped the southern US when it is time to open a new factory. They've never invested very much in the southern US for any kind of assembly. They stuck to the midwest, and are now investing into Mexico even when the foreign automakers are building plants in Mississippi, Alabama, and South Carolina.
Even Tesla is investing billions in a new factory in Austin. General Motors has factories in Arlington, TX and Spring Hill, TN. But pretty much all of the many other factories in the south is from a Japanese, German or Korean car company. A Louisiana-centric message board should not be so supportive of a car company that thinks so little of them and the people in their region.

Well when you put it that way, frick Ford.

I'm sure they are still making bank with people paying MSRP on existing vehicles. You can sell less when you charge more and people pay more.
They just had record revenue based upon the shares they owned and sold of Rivian.

The new Nissan Frontier is a great little pickup that will last a very long time without requiring a lot of expensive maintenance and repairs. And IMO the Nissan Titan is also highly under-rated vehicle. Nissan makes them both in Canton, Mississippi along with the Nissan Altima.

Hyundai is using part of the old HUMMER factory in Shreveport to install accessories on their cars. They employ two or three hundred people there. They take cars made in Korea or Alabama and install install accessories spec'd out by dealerships before they take delivery of the finished car. If the state could give Hyundai a decent tax break for renovation, the rest of the Shreveport plant is probably in the running for more operations from Hyundai/Kia.
Ford will never do anything of significance in Louisiana or Mississippi.

Brandon will find a way to pay those union members while they sit at home

I haven’t been paying attention much, what’s the actual disaster?
Long waits or the insane markup or both, or something else
