It's both. People don't understand it but the companies also do plenty of shady, unethical shite to push the bottom line. It's not mutually exclusive.

I won't deny that shady shite goes on in the insurance industry, usually from the sales reps and very rarely from the underwriters or claims department. The incidents of legitimate claims being denied is extremely rare because they are subject to regulatory reviews at all times.

It's harder to regulate the sales reps because most disputes come down to "he said, she said". However, if it's provable that the sales rep knowingly misled a customer applying for insurance, the punishments are pretty severe.

Nobody however, regulates the consumers. This leads to billions of dollars in fraud every year, and in the end the dishonest consumer fricks the company, everyone else who now have higher premiums, and ultimately themselves when their claim is denied.

At least you didn't deny it.

Did you lie about your weight? A preexisting condition? Your tobacco use? Drug use?

Tell us about how you tried to outsmart a group in a Trillion dollar industry to save money on your premiums and then show us where they touched you.

Goddamn. I love when people suckle at the tit of their benevolent insurance overlords as if they give two shits about you. Newsflash. They don’t. If they could find a way to skip out on playing 99.9% of claims, they would. Only reason they don’t is that it’d be too shady to still be profitable.

You’re very defensive.

Sorry you hate yourself for what you’ve become.

They nickle and dime things that they're legitimately obligated to cover, them they'll turn around and settle clearly specious claims without a murmur. Their decision-making process is opaque and nonsensical.

No. People bitch about insurance bc instead of just covering shite like they should they figure out ways to not pay for some underlying reason that was printed on the back of page 57 of your policy.

Goddamn, you couldn't be a better example of what that guy was talking about. Also, in this hypothetical, you signed a piece of paper saying that you read the policy, understood it, and agreed to its terms, so I find it hard to have any sympathy for your hypothetical whining that you don't like the terms of the policy.

Yes, let’s completely ignore the billions of dollars Allstate,Geico, State Farm et al ad nauseum spend on advertising. Economies of scale

Those policies are designed so the layman can't understand them if he does read them. It's probably wise to have a lawyer look over every contract you sign, but it's impractical for most people.

If they'd not spend $1million dollars for a golf pro and a helicopter and a camera crew and then air time... that would be some costs not passed along to the actual insureds!

I'm sorry we know your house flooded due to the hurricane, but since the wind caused the flooding instead of rain we are denying your coverage because you didnt buy the wind coverage.

Sounds about right.

A lot of OTers have a knee-jerk reaction and will take the corporation's side over the consumer's every time, regardless of facts. It's sort of a populism in reverse.

Most people probably would if it weren't required by law to have insurance.

Insurance companies are no better than personal injury attorneys. A necessary evil.

Insurance companies routinely frick people over in the claims process thereby creating the need for plaintiffs attorneys. Then they bitch about plaintiffs attorneys. Frick insurance companies.

All sides profit off the biggest legal skim in America along with defense attorneys and shady medical providers. The Mafia could not come up with such a predatory scheme. Unlike the mafia, the predators send the state legislature instead of Guido to force you to buy their product.
