For those who have had Invisalign - how many trays did you need before finishing?

I started Invisalign quite some time ago after having banged up teeth for most of my adult life. I thought it would be quicker and easier but boy was I wrong. I'm now on a third set of refinements and by the time I'm finished this set, I will have had 52 sets of trays. I'm now wishing I had just gone with traditional metal braces since I think those would have done the job more efficiently. 52 trays seems excessive to me when this was sold to me as a 23 tray program then done. If you've had them before, how many did you need before you were finally finished?

Blame your parents for your banged up teeth.

Good news is there's no additional cost regardless of how many additional trays are needed. But it's still a pain in the arse when I was expecting one thing and it keeps changing every time I go back.

Nah, your wife just didn't like the idea of her pubes getting caught in metal braces. I really should send you the bill for reimbursement.

What adult would want metal braces?

Hey, hey, hey, now wait just one fricking minute here.... My wife shaves her pubes and she technically has a tad bit of both African AND Arab in her.

And lots of Irish

Sometimes aligners are more efficient and sometimes not.

Were your teeth crowded or spaced? Any rotations?

Describe how you are wearing the trays.

I had braces as a kid, so my need has been much less. I am on tray 9 of 10 right now. Hopefully I don't need anymore beyond 10.

I had 20 and it took less than a year to fix my over bite and bad spacing. 52 seems like a LOT!

My teeth were crowded, especially the bottom teeth but they're all much better now. Only problem now is my bite didn't correct the way they thought it would so the refinement set I'm on now (3 of 13) is to correct my bite. I was initially wearing them for one week at a time, about 22 hours a day but now I'm wearing them for 2 weeks at a time.

I spent over 2 years dealing with mine. It was supposed to be 1 year and 20-something trays. Then another 15 or so. Then another 10 or so. My dentist was fantastic, though, and she made sure the result was perfect before she signed off. And it didn’t cost anything extra so no big deal.

I also opted for the invisalign retainers instead of a permanent retainer. Been 2+ years and no issues of teeth moving out of alignment. I wore them religiously at first but now I’m usually good for 5 nights a week.

I'm really considering getting a permanent retainer when I'm finished. No way I'm remembering to put them in every night after getting used to not wearing them during the day again.
