I've been with my company 17 yrs. about 8 yrs ago the culture changed and now it sucks. I sit in my cubicle thinking there's has to me more to life than this. Not sure how much longer I can hang on there.

Is it possible to move closer?

I found another job. Start it next month and I cannot wait. I actually feel excited about work now.

Yes, but at a significant cost.
There's a commuter bus that takes workers into the city. I was taking it for a bit, but itha option doesn't offer much flexibility if I need to leave the office during the day.

Alcohol.
Drugs.
Avoid going into the office as much as possible.

I'm happy with my office job at $35,000 a year but I'm willing to hate an office job for $45,000 a year. Anybody hiring?

ICU nurse for 15 years and I absolutely hate it . I've been spit on, kicked, punched, bitten.... You name it. I've sat with a young father of three little girls as he died . Late stage ALS and I promised his wife I wouldnt let him die alone. I've seen so much shite that I could watch someone die and go eat a ham sandwich like nothing happened. It has provided a decent living and The weather is perfect, but man it is a thankless job. Guess the best thing is that I work 3 twelve hour shifts and am off a good bit to fish.

My job is so/so.. I'm a supervisor which is more like babysitting . The worse part is putting up with one miserable frick that works for me, he's kin to one of the higher ups.ive wrote him up several times but they will not let me shite can him....he's a 38 yr old short fat white guy who wants to be black. He comes to work with car " booming", talks Ebonics and at lunch when goes to eat he will sag his pants..... one of the other workers told him, you know you're not black right? His response was " I'm about that life and don't nobody want to cross me" whatever the hell that means.....he's around 5'6" 250ish

I used to absolutely love caring for my pediatric patients and their families. Loved the satisfaction I got from the job besides my paycheck. But over the years the changes administration has made has just slowly chipped away at that. I started feeling annoyed and bitter and frustrated at work on a regular basis. Started having trouble sleeping during the day and staying up all night for my shift. Started dreading every single shift I had to work and just wishing they would call to cancel me or put me on call instead. Started calling in sick when I really wasn't just because I needed a break sometimes.
I didn't go into nursing to feel that way. I'm hoping my new nursing job will respark my love for the nursing profession.

I have no answers. Ungodly amounts of independent wealth seems unlikely at this point.
You seem like a nice person.

For the people that work for yourself, what do you do about insurance in this current state?

I worked for the same person for 25 years (first 10 he was my biggest client, last 15 I worked in house reporting to him). He was a first class jerk - I cringed whenever he called me into his office. But the compensation was great - he always got me and his other reports good raises and bonsuses. The work itself was exciting - I got to travel alot so I put up with it.

One thing I like about my job is that I don't really have to deal with many people. I can close my office door, put on my headphones and get to work. It doesn't matter as long as I get my shite done.

The whole "love what you do" thing is bogus for most of us.
I'd love to deliver pizza and end each day with no worries, but that don't pay the bills.

Nurse, you have classic signs of burnout. I hope your new job helps you out.
I was that way during the last few years of my FedGov LEO career. It literally sickened me thinking about work. When I retired, I found that I was having anxiety attacks on occasion. They went away and I'm much healthier and happier now.
I hope to start my next career in 2017.
