You're just wrong on this.
Other countries are doing it successfully and managing outbreaks. If we reduce the transmission rate to less than R(1), then we can reopen parts of society with social distancing requirement to maintain around an R(1) transmission rate which won't overwhelm hospitals and give patients the best chance of survival.
You keep assuming that we go from lockdown to full-blown 100,000 people in Tiger Stadium and then have subsequent huge spikes.

I think we have to define "under control" to really discuss.
In my view, "under control" means not seeing increase in rates of new cases. A stabilization in the growth rate.
We can't lock down until the whole thing is gone, but I would expect our growth rates to level off in the coming weeks.

It's r can it be done safely?
Flattening the curve isbased on strict adherence to social distancing and government intrusion. It lasts longer, it doesnt end more quickly.

My opinion is we didn't have to shut mom and pop down, they can safely operate with "distancing" requirements.
I believe in the end this will be viewed as folly. Probably a quarter of the country is out of money.
