This is how you swing when the pitch count is in your favor. This guy was "ahead" in the count.

I don't understand how the guy that got hit watches the other guy pick up the board, rear back, swing, and not even move or put his hands up. He just stands there and takes it.

Yea, I noticed that too. Between that and the stuff covering his face. Recipe for getting hit square in the jaw and never blocking.
I'd imagine the hitter was originally preparing for a block and a few follow up swings. Not necessary.
