re: Folks who don't buy an extended warranty are asking for it...

I love the "wasted money" takes....I buy warranties on my vehicles and hope I DON'T have to use them....I mean, we pay auto insurance premium's every single month, but no one is disappointed when you don't wreck your car just because you have insurance. Warranties are insurance. Plain and simple. It's worth it to me.

I save all the money that I would have spent on warranties for when something actually breaks. Then I pay for it with cash.
Guess who is winning, me or the warranty company?
I used to be you. I've been close to the industry on the OEM and supplier side for decades though, and I'm not you any more.
Some German makes (VW for one) charge astronomical amounts for extended warranties, which may not be worth it. Almost everyone else's IS worth it, and that includes Honda and Toyota, especially when you can shop around and get a lower price from a volume warranty dealer.

I was always told if you drive an average amount (12k-15k miles a year) and keep up with your vehicle then an extended warranty is a scam. These new vehicles are well made for the most part, they don’t just shite out in 2 years
2021 truck owner here. Warranty ended at 36k miles. 60k miles on it now and 0 issues

My warranty just paid a friendly $5800 claim for me.
What was the issue with your vehicle?

Wrong IMO
Cost / Risk / return and probability / impact thinking is your friend. In very rare cases would I agree with you. Like buying extended for penis enlargement surgery.
Kidding

I paid around $2,800 for my extended warranty on my F150 and I promise you I have received way more than $2,800 in repairs on it that the warranty covered.

When I saw the thread title, I figured you'd be downvoted to hell. I was not disappointed, but I agree with you.
I've bought the extended warranty with every car I've bought and been grateful to have done so each time. They've easily paid for themselves.
It's always paid for me to have it.

The worst part is the waiting for parts bc everything is on back order, so they keep your truck/car so you dont lose your place in line, wont give you loaner, so you end up having to rent a car.....which the warranty will pay for
Thankfully, my dealer always has a loaner for me and I've never had to worry about parts being on back order for more than a day.

Bought a used 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a Ford dealership. Purchased the extended warranty. Have already had to get the electric motor for the rear lift gate replaced and a switch for the passenger window. Only cost 100 dollar deductible.

I can say without a shadow of doubt, that the companies that sell extended warranties are NOT losing money on them. Worth it for the company? Yes. Worth it for the consumer? No

What is incorrect about that statement?

The fact that you think it needs to be said, like you are some genius.

Not saying I'm a genius by any means, just stating the fact that the consumer is gambling their money with warranties. You want to pay that much for "peace of mind", go for it. It may work out for you, but the odds aren't in your favor.

Why is that? I'm not disappointed if I don't have to use my warranty. That means my car didn't break down...why would I be mad about that?
Posted on 6/11/25 at 12:17 pm to themetalreb
I use it as a negotiating tactic. It’s worked about half the time. If we are between $500 and $1000 on the price I want to pay I ask them to throw in the extended warranty and call it even.
