Why would that be illegal? First I’ve heard of this.

It's been this way since 1949 in NJ.

The story that I've heard is your typical political corruption. Apparently, some baw back in the 1940s offered cheaper gas if you pumped it yourself, and the gas station owner cartel didn't like that, so they paid off some politicians to pass the law.

I was in NJ earlier this year, I pumped my own gas. I guess I'm not following something here.

You were probably just at a place that didn't care. Pursuant to the law, you could have been fined if reported and caught.

Moved up here in 2006 and haven't had to get out of the car in any type of weather to pump gas, sometines I hate it when I'm in a hurry but for the most part, love it, especially in the dead of winter

Lived in Oregon for a few years.

My first (and only) time in Oregon I drove down from Washington. Stopped in Astoria for gas and had no idea. The guy started walking over, looked at me and kinda shrugged, then turned around. Oregon seemed kinda lax on the whole “attendant needs to pump your gas” thing if I recall.

Most rural areas you could usually get away with pumping your own gas.

I always got mine at Fred Meyer and they had a team of guys (usually local high school kids) stationed outside manning the pumps.

Politicians said it was more about creating jobs than “safety”
