Fly deterrent - plastic ziplock bag

Is anyone familiar with the ziplock baggie filled with water (sometimes with pennies in the water) over a door as a fly deterrent?
Does this really work? What is the method (alleged method) of operation? Where did this get started?

What's the deal with the pennies in the bottom of the bag?

While we're on the subject, anyone familiar with digging a hole on the wrong side of the moon phase and not having enough dirt to fill the hole back up?

Used it before with mixed results. It doesn't do away with the issue, but it may be of some help.

just get one of those bug zappers, at least they are entertaining.

I used it for years when I had coonhounds and it worked for me. Placed a bag in each corner of the kennel. It's worth noting though, that I'm not a dead was and I regularly cleaned the kennels...
Never tried with the pennies so idk what that's about.

It has to do with refraction of light. Allegedly, the more shiny stuff (pennies) in the bag and more light refracting in the room confuses and annoys the flies. Probably makes it look like they're flying into a disco ball due to way they process images.
I've seen it work with mixed results. One lady swore by it in her diner, but she hung them all around the room and had a lot of florescent lighting. I can see the theory behind it.

seen this used in horse barns. I think its only partially effective as the barns I've seen them in still had flies buzzing around.
If you are experiencing a fly bloom, nothing is gonna keep them away. Give it a few days to get better.

Tried that in my barn once. The flies slept on it and within a few days it has so much fly shite stuck to it that I was beginning to think that it attracted them more than anything.
We had some of this orange plastic things that you nailed to a post and cracked a little pill in the top that coated them in some kind of poison. We had to scoop shovels full of dead flies out from under them. I'll see if I can find a link. We still had flies, but it was satisfying to know we were getting some revenge.
ETA: Looked very similar to this

they hate vinegar. but, i don't know how to use that in an open area. I pour vinegar in the trash cans occasionally. Works for that.

Sometimes not.
