Guess he blew his wad on the island
quote:

The Florida Keys man who bought an $8 million island off Key West this month was arrested over the weekend after police said he schemed to rip off Kmart of $300 in household goods.
quote:

Andrew Francis Lippi, 59, of Key Haven, was arrested Saturday on a felony charge of grand theft of $300 to under $5,000
quote:

A week before the arrest, he bought the well-known Thompson Island, the home to the Knight family for 70 years and most recently, philanthropist Edward B. Knight. Lippi said his family would live in the estate for a while.
quote:

The total value of stolen goods from Kmart, 2928 N. Roosevelt Blvd., was $300.59, police said. The items were a Keurig coffeemaker, a Hamilton Beach coffeemaker, eight light bulbs and a bed skirt.
quote:

According to the police report, between March 30 and April 5, Lippi bought the items and then returned the original boxes with other things packed inside.
quote:

Lippi told police he did not switch out any items. But police said he put a basketball in the Keurig box instead of the coffeemaker, which he paid $165 for on March 30 and returned the next day.
quote:

Instead of the original light bulbs he bought, other light bulbs were in the box and a bed skirt was returned with only a pillow case inside

You don't get rich enough for an 8 million dollar island without cutting a few corners

The most shocking part of the story is there are still Kmarts around.

I’ve had to return lightbulbs before that didn’t work and thought about how easy it would be to just replace the new bulbs with old bulbs and return them every time.

Probably what happened to me.

He also owns the house from Real World Key West, which rents for $1800 a night

Pretty simple, you know they aren't checking them.

well clearly they guy is an arse and its right that he is from florida with a thought process like that, odds are he has the island taken from him for lack of payment on property taxes

all that said i dont see how they can charge him if they didnt open the boxes at the time of the return there must be more to this story and guys with that much money never get arrested for disputable crimes barely over $300. this whole thing smells of some underlying shite being the real issue

Pretty good detective skills to uncover such an elaborate ruse.

It’s actually located right next to a Sears.
Aside from a TJ Max, a Ross, and Home Depot you have to drive about 175 miles to find something like a Walmart or a target.
That KMart is about as third world as it gets. Broken shelves, cracked dirty floors, empty shelves, etc. I go in there as little as I have to. Maybe once a year
