This is a good story, but how did the school make him? Did they threaten to hold his diploma or something?

When I was a junior in HS, I was close to a lot of the seniors, kids I had grew up with and known since I was a kid.. Anyway, a bunch of them decided they were going to do something stupid when they went on stage to get their diploma.

They each had something different. A different dance.. Someone blew bubbles, etc.. The administration was severely pissed so after the ceremony they had a list of everyone who did something while going across stage and held their diploma.

In order to get their diploma they had to go meet with the administration, with their parents and apologize for doing what they did. I am still really good friends with one of the guys who had his diploma held. At the time he said he wasn't sorry so he wasn't going to apologize.

He is a mechanical engineer. He has never had or needed a copy of his HS diploma.

That's why I was asking how did they make him go? Did they threaten to hold his diploma?

That's a fricked up story, even if the coach got fired.

But how do you refuse to be valedictorian? I can see refusing to give a speech, but you're still valedictorian.

In LA (in 1979) you only needed 20 credits to graduate. There was a guy in my class who was brilliant. He made straight A's in all Honors classes. He was a cinch for valedictorian, but his senior year he only took two classes and worked the rest of the day at Pizza Inn. Or smoked dope. But, regardless of how he spent his free time, he wasn't in class. Maybe because he was bored. Maybe because he was lazy. Maybe because he was probably smarter than the teachers. It's hard to say.

However, when valedictorian was announced, he didn't get it. Another guy, who was nice and also very smart, won. I honestly don't think the first guy gave a shite, but his replacement took a lot of unnecessary bullshite about it.

Its a lot cooler to be a "nerd" today, but I think during the 60s- the early 2000s there were a lot of people who didn't want that "nerd" image.

If you were an athlete that was cool. If you were a dope head, that was cool, but at the bottom were the nerds.

There were the smart kids who didn't want to be a nerd so they were primarily known for being an athlete or dope head or whatever...

Not going to lie, when I saw that kid the first time crying and just repeating "Jesus f-ing Christ" over and over, I laughed a bit. But when ESPN shot to him a SECOND time I thought "oh Christ that poor kid. why would they go back to him."

IIRC, they threatened to withhold his diploma. It was 1993, so things were different. He got his diploma, everyone cheered for him. The salutatorian that assumed the valedictory acknowledged him in her speech. I haven't seen him in person since.

He was announced and said he didn't want it nor did he want to actually appear at graduation. That incident made him go into a shell. He didn't make people uncomfortable, and he spoke when spoken to, but he just withdrew from the school, socially. Never had a girlfriend, didnt attend prom or parties. He was the smartest guy in our class by a mile but wasn't in Honor Society or Beta Club.

He was obviously brilliant, and a couple of teachers broke through to him and he would open up to them. One of those told us one day that there were a couple of other guys in our class that still teased him about the incident in our senior year - this happened in ninth grade.

Ive thought a lot about him over the years. He just turned a 180 seemingly overnight. He went to an exclusive school out of state and built a normal life.

I get that they are donating some of the revenue to proceeds, but pay the boy and his family if you are going to use his design and circumstances for profit.

I think i saw an article after the original story came out, that said the university is now donating 100% of the proceeds of the T-shirt sales to anti-bullying campaigns.. no link though.

I’m not sure how i feel about the kid getting paid, but at the very least i think UT should give him a full ride scholly since he has engendered worldwide goodwill for the university during a time when their football team reminds me of the LSU Curley Hallman years.... and they should invite him to lead the Vols team onto the field in a couple weeks when they play at Univ of Florida.. but that would of course mean the kid and his family would have to give up their anonymity.
