Didn’t Sports Illustrated sue Sports Illustrated back in the 90’s

I think I remember that’s why they changed the name to just Sports.

I don't doubt either that the show asked them first. Flori-Bama is not the name of the region. The show is in Panama City Beach. People call it lots of other things, PCB, the Panhandle, Lower Alabama, North Florida, the Wiregrass, the Tri-states, the Gulf, the Gulf Coast, the Emerald Coast... not Flori-Bama. Thats the semi-famous bar. They probably were trying to profit off it

Yeah I've never heard it referred to as flora-bama shore.

I disagree. I was flipping through the channel guide the other day, saw it and thought, hey, they made a show about the Flora-Bama. Watched 10 minutes, got exponentially stupider and went on with my flipping. I hope they win.

Hmmm, I guess you've got a point

I would watch their live feeds while drinking alone at the house if they broadcast it.

Agreed. There is little likelihood of confusion between a TV show and a bar.

I disagree. I definitely could see an argument that the name of the show created confusion that it had something to do with, or was somehow licensed, promoted, etc. by the bar.

Anytime ANYONE on the gulf coast hears the term "Florabama", they immediately think of the bar, not the actual Alabama-Florida border. The term "Florabama" is synonymous with one thing...the bar. And it is a unique and arguably highly distinctive trademark. Furthermore, not that the Florabama is the classiest of joints, but the trademark for the bar does have a significant amount of goodwill attached to the name. Certainly enough to try to prevent a shitty TV show from diminishing it.

The ultimate venue of the dispute will likely be important, but if he remains in a court on the gulf coast then I think you are going to see MTV quickly rename the show, cancel it, or pay to license the trademark.

Interesting suit

Yeah, I thought the name was quite perplexing when I saw the show was set in PCB.

They wanted it to have Southern branding. You gotta let them know this is the part of Florida that's "the South". Ironically they couldn't just put it on an Alabama beach and called it Bama Shore because Alabama beaches aren't trashy enough for them

the place is absolutely packed 9 months out of the year. They don’t need the publicity

They may need the $$$$.
The owners bought a shopping center in GS last year, along with the old zoo property (roughly 23 acres) in hopes of turning it into an “East Flora-Bama”. They closed the restaurant in the shopping center before the season this year, and are upside down in the investment. Things are not going as planned.
