My roomie at LA Tech did the pilot program there.

But the question is why? A good friend was an AH-64D pilot, and didn't have enough hours to fly dudes to oil rig after 4 years in the Army.

Fixed wing, I've also met old college friends that flew F/A-18s for the USMC, and were couch surfing flying fixed wing freight and making less than $30K a year.

Flying is insane now. When I got my ppl in 2009 a Cessna 152 could be bought for $20k, $50k for a decent 4 place plane. Now 152s are going for nearly 6 figures and anything d decent is over 100k.
Rental rates are so high. I always wanted to go back for my instrument rating. . I haven't PIC a plane in years. So basically I wasted the $12,000 I spent. Probably a lot more now too.

I went to Flight Academy of New Orleans. My instructor had was a 22 year old kid who now flies copters.

I’m pursuing my PPL in BR right now and having a blast!

Def do online ground school. My training is Part 141 which has online ground school and in-flight training timed together. Part 141 has phase progress checks as well

Be advised that it will cost more than what the schools say on their websites. Most schools quote the FAA minimums but students typically require more flight hours before being fully ready for their check ride

My flight school uses NR for touch and go’s. There’s def a pucker factor landing on that narrow runway compared the BTR

You don't need to do this.

Paul's Fly and Die

BTW, I'm a licensed PP and my flight test was the most terrifying thing I've ever done.

Pretty sure new Iberia and New Orleans are the only two places in the state for helicopter training. I’m in the one in new Iberia and am happy with the school and my instructor. Helicopter is expensive though. Figure a couple grand a week if you want to fly enough to finish in a decent amount of time.

Who are you training with? I'm a rusty pilot who is looking at knocking off the rust and start flying again. I've been looking at Plane Nuts Aviation at Louisiana Regional along with Gulf Coast Aviation at BTR.

Since both Owens at LFT and Aviation academy at KARA are both recommended, do yall think it’s better to do flight school at a busy airport so that you are used to more traffic or a smaller airport like new Iberia?

I did my work at Lakefront NOLA (KNEW) and really believe that having the Tower / Controlled factor early made it easy to get a handle on my radio work. You can typically tell a pilot that did not train at a controlled airport when they get on the radio with the Tower.

I performed most of my maneuvering work in the "Practice Area" (East of I-10 Twin Spans), but did tons of TNG's in Slidell (KASD) and Picayune (KMJD)--both of which are uncontrolled--but always flew into and out of KNEW.

I did all of my PPL training, while stationed in Southern California, out of Chino Airport. While I enjoyed flying around SoCal, it is very busy airspace. I would much rather have done it at an airport where there is less traffic.

I used to tell people that the best option is to buy your own plane for training as I was fortunate that I found a young CFI with his own plane (PA-28-160) just trying to build time to make the jump to airline. Once he got called up, I bought the plane from him (18 hours total at the time) and found a new independent CFI.

HOWEVER, this was in 2016 and I bought the plane for $22k. That same plane today would be $50-$60k.It was absolutely perfect for me, and I used it to build tons of hours but likly not as feasible today.

Now I am in a 4 person partnership on a PA-28-235 (250hp conversion) at NEW and absolutely love it.

Of course, most partnerships don't want student pilots due to the potential wear and tear on the plane.

I would recommend finding the right partnership if you're interested in ownership. I was part of a four person partnership on a 172 based out of the Slidell Airport. It was great as the five of us shared all expenses as opposed to bearing all of the maintenance costs solo. The only reason I sold my share was they moved the plane to Picayune as they got a good deal on a T-Hangar. It was just too far for me to drive from Baton Rouge to Picayune to only fly for an hour or so on the weekend.

I’m enrolled with Gulf Coast. Good group of people. 4 aircraft (172’s) mean you’re likely to get the training slot you want. Maintenance is very good

Highly recommend Katie, Ryan, and Brandon.

Flying out of BTR is great. It’s busy at times but slow at others. It definitely teaches you how to operate in active airspace

The benefit of flying out of field like New Iberia is you’re in the air almost immediately.

However, you’ll gain better experience with comms and traffic avoidance getting in and out of a Class C everyday.

It doesn’t really matter.
Lafayette will take longer to take off and be much more demanding. Acadiana Regional is easy peezy but still controlled by a tower. Big both have huge runways which is great for training.
Go take a discovery flight at both schools.
