I got a FitBit HR Charge for Xmas. Damn thing is extremely fickle. Works well one day, the next day I have to reboot it so it will track.

I was online today dealing with another aggravation when I noticed that FitBit has my BMI wrong.

I put my weight in as 190, and for a male, it automatically sets it around 25-26 BMI. I've seen the chart that states a male my height (5-11) should weigh 170 in order to be fit. My BMI is NOT 25, but easily half that, maybe less. This stupid chart is telling me I am "overweight" and not far on the graph from "obese".

I scoff at this notion.

I went to adjust this and it will not allow me. I have tried contacting them, tried the FAQs, etc.

Is it just going to be stuck on this? If so, this thing will not even come close to measuring my activity in terms of calories burned.

BMIis a simple calculation. Its not an opinion and its different than body fat %.

And yes 190 is a bit heavy for 5-11.

Understood. My dumbass thought it was a formula that could be adjusted.

Well, to be frank, the smallest I could probably get is 180-182 without depleting more muscle. I've lowered my weight over the years, but if I were to get to 170, I'd be a stick.

That was me 20 years ago. I just got tired of having to maintain all that muscle.

The older I got, I slowly lowered my weight. I'm at the point where I like it, but I'm not overweight by any stretch. That BMI should be call BSI

Do you know what BMI is? It's a simplistic calculation based on height and weight only. Don't worry about it if it isn't an accurate calculation for your body.

Are you confusing BMI with body fat percentage? The two are completely different. According to the NIH your BMI is 26.5. See the link below.

That does not necessarily mean that you are overweight, fat or out of shape. Any tool as simple as BMI obviously is a guideline and other information is needed to assess fitness.

BMI is stupid because it doesn't account for muscle. I'm 5-10 and 185 but solid muscle and my BMI is the same as the fitbit wearing fatty that's 5-10 and 185 but can't bench 135 or run 800m.

Wait, do you really think your BMI should be 12.5? That would mean you are malnourished and starving. Do you have any idea what BMI actually means or are you just going off of internet "experts" interpretation of it? Like it or not the BMI calculation is right. I'll even do the math to prove it to you. Here are the formulas for it.

1. BMI = [weight(in pounds) * 703]/[height(in inches)^2]
or
BMI = weight(in kilograms)/height^2(in meters)

Based on the info you provided your BMI is

BMI = (190 * 703)/71^2
= 133570/(71 * 71)
= 133570/5041
BMI = 26.49

According to the math you are overweight, but you are 3.5 spots away from obese and that is actually alot. So maybe you need to educate yourself on BMI and what it means.

Speaking of educating yourself on BMI, the first place to start off would be that BMI is meant as a fast and easy measurement of a large population (i.e. a state) and not that useful on an individual level. For example, it does not take into account bone or muscle mass differences in individuals. There is no set guideline for being overweight and/or obese as an individual. You have to take BMI, waist to hip ratio, percent body fat, etc into consideration. However if all your other health stats are good (get a yearly physical to know those) and your waist to hip ratio is good, and you have a BMI of 26.49 then you are probably slightly overweight and need to some cardio and put down the fork baw.

There is a ton of other things besides body size and activity level that dictate caloric expenditure. So if you think a fitbit will tell your exact caloric expenditure than you are going to be disappointed. However, they are good tools to let you know your activity level and will give you a ballpark figure on your caloric expenditure so that you can balance your caloric intake (how much you eat) to that. If you want a more accurate measure get a Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) calculator and the keep up with all your daily activity, heart rate, respiration rate, mental state, and what you eat, how it was prepared, what you drink,etc but that is alot of work, and unless you are doing academic research (like what I did for 18 months) it is not really worth it. So just keep in mind that a fitbit has a margin of error of ~10% (200-300 calories on a standard western diet) and eat accordingly.

Just turned 44 with no injuries and still train pretty hard. Maybe at 64, I will slim down. I actually carry 225 pretty well as it's mostly in my arse/quads but I have been as heavy as 250 in the offseason.

I did. As I mentioned earlier I got it confused with another measure.

I did after I was corrected yesterday.

I don't mind bumping the thread to admit I was a dipshit and also to educate other dumbasses like me.

Thanks for the info!

This is what I found out yesterday.

Mine is going to be off by a little more, as after the research, I found I burn more calories daily. I exercise a lot and am very active outside of that.

My vice is a sweet tooth. If I could get rid of that, I'd be built like a greek gawd. I'll just settle for what I have and be happy. I'm doing well for my age. Well above average.

Same here.

I've got about 6-10 lbs of chewed arse fat I need to shed, and that's after lifting, doing cardio consistently for 4.5 months, and eating fairly clean. Not completely.

I'm shedding the #caf, but adding muscle at the same aka gainz. It's why I don't care about the scale or BMI. It's a clown index.

Congrats on the anorexia.

A healthy BMI is 18-24.
