This is actually good advice. I had this very situation and started not only emailing him at ungodly hours but calling his cell phone. The key is to develop "decision needed right now" important situations. After a couple of months, he called me in and related how he appreciated my hard work, that I was free to come and go as I pleased AND he officially increased my decision authority so I wouldn't have to consult with him anymore. Worked like a charm.
Key is to not be a dick about it and/or make it obvious. If you just shower him with stupid contacts (i.e. "I will be away from my desk for five minutes taking a piss.") you will only make him angry.

Without knowing the particulars of your job, I would think he has a legitimate gripe. Your boss isn't asking you to come in early, and it seems his expectation is that you should be performing your duties during a certain time, not for a certain duration of time. Perhaps you should talk to him/them about possibly flexing your hours.

If your presence at the office isn't mandatory for later in the afternoon (meetings/clients etc.) and you're putting in the same time as everyone else, I don't see why not

People should work the scheduled hours. If you want to work more than the say 8am-5pm hours then that is on you. People working different schedules always causes problems.

Number of hours at work does not necessarily mean production. Bottom line is do you produce? Not sure what type of work you do, but I am sure your bosses are able to evaluate your production versus that of your peers. If you are equal to or better then they should keep their mouths shut. If you are not, they have a valid concern.

One of two of my bosses always gets mad that I leave early. But I get to the office 1-2 hours before anyone. Does he have a gripe. I don't need to be in the office as I frequently work from home.
Same here except I get there and leave early/normal time while bosses and others get there later and stay later (or often not). Very aggravating when a comment is made but luckily it's not too often. I also consistently take short lunches or work through while they take 2 hours. frickers.

Yea, office hours are 7:30-5 m-th 7:30-1:30 on Friday.
My schedule is 6-6 and 6-1:30. Working one or two Saturdays a month to. It's not expected of me, but I'm rewarded for it all.

I'm this way too. I get in at 7:00 and don't punch a clock, most guys get in around 8:00 some at 9:00. So when I'm ready to roll at 3:30 I always feel like I'm leaving early.
FWIW I went and talk to my boss and informed him I come in at 7:00 and if it was causing any issues with me leaving 1 or 2 hrs. before everyone else and he said as long as your work is done on time and it's cool.
But I still wonder sometimes.

Have a crucial conversation. One of my bosses had me read that book and I think he regrets it now because I use it on his arse all the time.
Go address the situation when he's not mad and you're not mad. Explain you're concerned that you upset him and he'll most likely understand and appreciate the conversation. As long as you both come to an understanding it's all good. Based on your post I'd bet you can continue to work the shift you like minus him getting all butthurt about it.

This. I get way more work done in 6 hours than most of the people here that take a smoke break every 30 minutes or the people that sit and talk to each other all day. I dont feel bad at all when i leave early because of this.

How did this become an issue later on? I recently moved my hours up to 7-4 but I went to my boss and had a conversation about it beforehand to make sure there would be no issue. Do people really just start showing up earlier without ever discussing it with anybody?

Get there 5 minutes before everyone else, leave 5 minutes after.
Problem solved.

my boss is two time zones earlier than me. So, he is always calling meetings that are 8am my time, 6am his time.
So I do the reverse, I call meeting at 5pm my time, 7pm his time.

At my former employer going through layoffs it became a competition who could come in the earliest and leave the latest.
There was a pack of admin assistant types who practically lived there. They got in at 7:00 am and left after 7 pm everyday but they failed to realize just being in the building doesn't make you a better employee.

his boss works some long hours

They know I get calls through the night if there is any issue. Bottom line is one is fine with it but the other makes little comments. One that is fine with it is the big boss so I really don't care.
Just wondering what people thought. I won't be here come summer as I want to move back to BR.

sure. Why not?
