The best in town(assuming you're in Baton Rouge) is Bart Keller Pool Company.

I don't build pools, but I've done the electrical on scores of them, and Keller is by far the best in the business. You pay for what you get.

I was always told that a really nice pool always costs about as much as a nicely appointed Cadillac.

Where is the OP? In Houston area $40,000 is one notch above a white plaster hole in the ground. When you start adding the things you can picture when thinking of a great pool, it gets to 6 figures quickly. Hot tub, water feature or slide, good plaster like pebble tech, flagstone, it all adds up quick.

Get a hot tub!!!! When you are dropping 88k, what is the difference in 98k? You will love the hot tub and the added heater buy take a chill out of the entire pool adding about a month or so of extra swim days. Wives always bitch about it being to cold. Kids give zero fricks, and will swim until their lips turn blue.

then skip the useless 8-10 foot deep end and get a pool about 4-5 feet deep all the way across and make it more of an activity pool. Deep end is a pain in the arse to vacuum if you don't use a robot or Polaris and you'll get WAY more use out of your pool playing volleyball, basketball or countless other activities you can't do in 8 feet of water.

This.

All of this. Ours is 9ft. Instead of 20 minutes to vacuum, it takes 2 hours.

Give Eric White of Cool Pools a call. He did my parent's pool and did an excellent job. Didn't bullshite on price or come back asking for more money. He's a good guy

Few questions from someone that has a pool.

Do you have kids? If so how old?

Does your neighborhood have a lot of kids and do those kids have their own pool?

Do you have neighbors or family nearby with a pool?

Do those neighbors or family have kids?

Did you grow up with a pool or know how to take care of one?

Answer these questions and I'll tell you if you should get a pool.

$50k budget turns into $100k pretty quick.

Sure, you can get a decent pool for $50K then you (or your wife) will want a larger patio area, more landscaping, outdoor pavilion or pool house (you will want a bathroom), wrought iron fencing, outdoor kitchen, etc.

I would do it again at that stage of my life (3 kids used it all the time for 15 years). The last 5 years (before I sold the house) were miserable as we rarely used it and everything started to break.

It's litertthe worst possible investment you can make. Sell your first home in 5 years and buy a home with a pool. Let the first guy take the hit. Don't be an idiot

Correct, I would buy a house with a pool already installed and let that "owner" deal with the headaches. Don't get me wrong pools are cool but you'll never recoup your installation costs.

Just echoing what's been said in this thread a bit...

Get what you want the first time. Gas is better than electric (if getting a heater or spa). Actuate everything you can.

50k will get you a very basic pool with 3 feet of concrete around it. You may have a water feature but it'll look like an old man pissing in the pool. Don't expect to pay that and have a great experience. Some people get lucky, but most won't.

Use a good pool builder with references. There are a couple around town. You will get what you pay for. The extra you spend up front will pay off when you have issues or need a call out last minute. The good pool builders will usually add in free labor on service calls for a period of time for you and some even offer a "pool school" for you to get you acclimated with maintenance.

Your pool equipment is key. Again, get what you want now.

The big thing for me is if you are trying to price yourself out now and go cheap, then don't get one. You will spend money on it year round depending on your level of upkeep. Even the best kept and maintained pools will have issues from time to time.

Don't put a pool in bro. Unless you plan on being in it constantly it's a damn headache and a money pit

Adding value or not, I would not buy a house with a pool.
Too much upkeep
Takes away from back yard area
Etc.

Wait until the repeat of the housing crisis in 2008 to get your pool. The contractor might even throw in a couple of reach arounds to sweeten the deal up.

I know someone putting in a descent sized pool for 26k. I do know it's a liner pool which most people seem to recommend against.

Bart Keller is the best in the business?? My first pool was built by Keller, next two by Ewing Aquatech. Honestly the difference in expertise, experience, and level of craftsmanship is no less different than driving a Chevy Lumina compared to a 911 Turbo S Cabriolet. It's been a few years so I don't know what's up with Ewing currently but for the past 30 years, I'd be willing to bet the quality and quantity of work would amount to literally millions of dollars in differences in overall business. As far as prices, just depends on how nice you want it. I remember looking at pools in B.R that Ewing built that would be in the $300,000 - $500,000 range when I started shopping for my second pool... Maybe even double that and more by now but I think $50-60k could get you a quality pool if you keep it simple.

You can do like we did 3 years ago and convince your parents to get one. Best decision we've made. Our kids go over there and swim 5 days a week at least, and we enjoy it on the weekends with zero costs to us and zero maintenance on our hands.

Join the local country club. It will have a pool and you can pay about 20 years of dues for the price you are going to pay for the pool.

Don't let the poors convince you not to get a pool. If you want one and you have the money then dive right in.
