Bankston suspects that LSU hierarchy wanted to get rid of the Illinois IT specialists because of their criticism of the university relying on an IBM mainframe that is no longer supported by IBM and must be repaired with parts found on eBay.
So if you complain to your bosses about having old equipment and your boss fires you...that’s against the law... and you can file a lawsuit?
Wish the state could save the money on the lawsuits to buy new computer equipment.

fricking COBOL?
There's still PLENTY of COBOL out there esp. handling batch processes. Things that have worked for 30+ years that folks are too afraid to touch. You'd be amazed.
ETA after I posted this and scanned the thread, I learned that there are a lot of other old farts on the O-T.

From what I understand, Cobol is considered more secure because so few people know how to use it. That means no one is writing viruses in that language and no one knows how to crack that programming. Also you can basically demand whatever pay and benefits you want if you're a great Cobol programmer.

I came up on COBOL back during the ice age. Thought it would die before me. Not yet.

I work for a software company. We have customers that refuse to upgrade, but have to due to being able to replace Windows NT and Windows 98 machines.

Yeah, it’s still reliable and there are very few that know the language so they can demand high salary.

You'd end up with a bunch of Indians cruising around Mumbai with Louisiana license plates.

You'll have a hard time finding a new pc that will run Windows 7 now. I worked on NT quite a bit early in my career though

So the same system that runs TigerDroppings?

These people all broke LSU policy and state law and now have the gumption to sue LSU. As alumni if I where LSU I would let loose the dogs of war.

It's true. I know people who run payroll for LSU. Say mainframe looks like something out of a "sci-fi movie made in the 80s"

Haven't had any problems yet bringing in college graduates for COBOL in BR.

Not really, there are pros and cons to custom systems versus off the shelf. That LSU sis is completely customized for LSU. You will never get that with Banner or Peoplesoft. And workday’s sis is vapored are compared to those two products. The problem was not the cobol or customer package, the problem is not having an upgrade path and support the product.

Assuming you meant vapor ware there.....that's a real stretch. It's not as mature as their HR and Financials but folks like UT Austin, OSU, and the U don't but vaporware.

Sorry for the typo. Yes vaporware in comparison to Banner and Peoplesoft, both products are much more mature than Workday. I was not suggesting that the Workday product is vaporware in the truest since of the term. I was surprised that people decided to go with Workday given the much better and more mature products on the market that would integrate with the SIS.
