Fingerprints might unlock and start your next car

With many key fobs vulnerable to hacking unless they are, say, wrapped with aluminum foil, security experts say carmakers will soon require fingerprinting. Not just to open the door, but to start the engine.
"This technology will be used in cars in two to four years," said Godfrey Cheng, corporate vice president for Silicon Valley-based Synaptics. "Driver identification will be revolutionary."
Understanding that car fobs present an increasing security risk, auto companies are following the lead of personal technology devices and moving toward vehicle access through fingerprinting, facial recognition and retina scans. LINK

what if you want to let your buddy borrow your car?

Why do we have key fobs?
What was wrong with a regular key?

I love how new cars look but I hate the fingerprint stuff to open the door and start it. I’m old school and rather use the key to open and star a car. I’m scared in the future cars will be hacked and you can’t control the situation.

My key works fine, thank you.

Obviously you cut off your finger and loan it to him. But you make a great point(er finger).

That would be awesome, actually.
You could even program the car's computers to allow different things for different drivers. You? Full use of the car and all of its capabilities. New teenage driver? Radio controls won't work while the car's in motion, volume is limited, engine power output is limited, etc., etc. Valet? Even more restrictive on power output and all infotainment systems are disabled.

not my car. Who wants their finger cut off during a car theft. Not me.

Well, you program his fingerprint into the car's security system. Better yet, you put his fingerprint into the system once and it stores it. Then at any time in the future, you can activate his fingerprint and tell the car that it should be active for only a specified window of time, then it won't work until you authorize it again.
Kinda like some of the newer door locks. You can give your housekeeper a code to unlock your front door so they can come in and clean, but the code is only good for a limited window of time. No worrying about keys and the possibility of them being lost or copies being made.

So I'm gonna have to cut off somebody's finger when I steal their car... I don't mind but they might.

Just give them the keys
Just give them the keys

BUT my main comment was meant because this "feature" would be on version 2,3,4,5,or 6. You know for a fact they will release it, people will buy it and realize the lacking feature they need. Then the company can sell "the fix"

I'm thinking pie in the sky anyway. I have no illusions that they're going to come out of the gate with a fully working, fully integrated, and actually useful system. Hell, bluetooth connectivity and smartphone integration isn't mature yet and they've been working on that a while.

I want to buy a car where the fanciest thing is power windows.
It will have a regular key, AM/FM radio, and an AUX port for your phone.
It will have a reliable engine, good gas mileage, and will last for years.
Do they still make these?

Find a granny with a low mileage Camry that has only been to church and the piggly wiggly for the last 15 years.
