Finding job after getting fired. How screwed am I?

Found out today that I was getting fired from my job due to performance. Never got put on a PIP. I had one higher up that had it out for me due to setting really unrealistic expectations and me not meeting them. I expressed my concerns from the start and even some other people agreed with me. Was only there for 2 years. I’m really worried about how I’ll fare in the job market given these circumstances and trying to explain this. I feel totally worthless and that’s it’s going to be a complete uphill battle to try and make myself a viable candidate.

Feel free to come at me with any advice or criticism for that matter.

FWIW, I am an auditor who worked for a local firm. My experience is mainly on the internal audit side of things.

Probably lose this explanation in the interview. The new boss doesn’t want to hear you whine about the old boss.

Sounds like you may be young into your career. Hopefully not a troll

Pick your self up grind away be transparent with your self and prospective employers.

If I am interviewing you throwing your cards
On the table and being transparent etc most will respect that!

I certainly don’t plan on saying that in an interview. I get how it looks.

I’ll be optimistic.

Maybe you managed to hang on at a crappy firm for two years. You’ll find a better job at a competent company in a few weeks, and will always wonder why you dealt with incompetency for two years.

My worry is that I am not an attractive person for a job if I come in and state that I got fired or messed up.

Don’t know your geographic market and how well the new firm knows the old firm, but culture fit or personality fit could work. shite, who says you didn’t have a sick relative and you took some time to be with them.

Most employers will only give date of hire, date of separation, and rate of pay. Especially big corporate ones. Anything else is asking for a lawsuit.

You’ve got plenty of room to fill in the gaps there

Why would you have to explain that to a new employer?

I’ve seen businesses hire people that they have fired multiple times.

Companies need people.
Show that you won’t be a loser and someone will give you a shot.

A lot of places will do that to slackers as a way to finally be able to get rid of them.

Hire resume writer and update it professionally

Create an outline of your amazing accomplishmens saving the company money, resolving inefficiencies etc

Practice a solid introduction for interviews

Answers questions with stories showing your experiences

Close the meeting sharing what you learned and how you'll use it to approach the role, benefit the team etc

You should internally audit your former employer

Go into the next interview humble. Tell them that you thought you could do the last job, but that you were mistaken and it was more than you could handle. Accept responsibility for that. It shows character. You may have to take a step back in your career path, but it’s a good chance for you to start over, rebuild. Eventually, you’ll be able to handle similar expectations to the ones at your last job.

Career setbacks sometimes happen. They’re nothing to be ashamed of if you learn from them.

In the current environment the only thing your former employer will do is verify employment.

If they do anything other than that it becomes a liability for them.

Just share facts. No sob stories. Find something that is a good fit and understand the scope of what you will be doing before you accept.

Frick it. People get fired all the time. Get up and bounce back higher. You’ll be fine.

My biggest fear is really how to explain this in an interview. In my eyes, the guy that got fired is always behind the guy that didn’t.
