We just always called them "blackberries," actually never heard them called "dewberries" until now.

Dewberries ran along the ground and were earlier than blackberries. Also larger and sweeter. We knew the difference as kids, somehow. I lost all fear of nature while picking blackberries. Stinging insects were never all that bad, heat and humidity you got used to. We never had any snake problems. The cobblers after made it all worth it. It just made me want to explore the hidden places all that much more.

Oh man, core memory for me as a kid, riding our bikes to the closest blackberry spots, picking buckets full and eating them with a little sugar on top.

I was telling my wife the other day that I can’t wait to take the kids pick some when they get a little older.

Farther north and my bushes are just now blooming. Good looking berries you found!

I've been listening to too many animal attack stories lately. Every time I see a berry patch now I'm looking around for bears!

Not too many bears in South Louisiana. Except around Catholic High

We don't have many here, either......I still look around.
I just listened to a story of a black bear attack where the bear feasted on the twig and berries of two guys after killing a woman and ripping the throat out of one of the guys. It got me skittish!

ETA: The state mammal for Louisiana is the Louisiana Black Bear. They're population has really bounced back in the past few decades. Watch your back, baw.

Grandparents had a mulberry tree on the west side of the house. We'd get old sheets and lay them under the tree, then get a ladder and get up in the tree and shake the limbs to make the mulberries fall out

Now that I’m back from python ketchin’ in the ‘glades, I’m ready to hit a blackberry spot I’ve been waiting on to ripen. It has literally eleventy billion berries. I could fill garbage bags with them.

If you find a mulberry tree in the swamp the big snapping turtles will be there in the spring to gorge themselves on carbs. Set a line. You will catch a big one.

Same here, at least a month away from having dewberries. Temps in mid 40s right now.
Man I love them though. Wild plums too, but I don't even know where any are anymore.

This is the first year we've actually been able to pick on our property, and the vines have been loaded. I think we've picked almost 3 gallons since late last week, and still plenty to go.

And the blackberries won't be ready for another 2 weeks or so...
