I think the data shows it "exists," but not what "causes" it. Maybe the mind causes it?

It's real in the same sense that delusions are real: yes people have them; no they are not based in reality.

No one has it now.

It's a diagnosis that is given when a provider can't figure out what is wrong with the patient. Chronic pain, tons of tests, nothing conclusive. People want to know that something is wrong with them. Boom....fibromyalgia

I've met a few people who had it. The one constant seems to be that those affected tend to be lazy count.

I've known a couple of people who were diagnosed with it. In one case it turned out to really be Epstein-Barr. Another case was really Cushing's.

In my experience, there is a high association of chronic fatigue and depression in patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Interestingly, if you consider the diagnostic criteria for chronic fatigue, there's a lot of diagnostic overlap.

Anecdotally speaking, 95% of the patients who carry a diagnosis of fibromyalgia also have the following:
5 or more "allergies", typically at least one to a less potent pain medication
Currently prescribed some sort of mood stabilizing drug (benzos, SSRI's) and potent pain medication (Percocet, Oxycontin, some even with Fentanyl patches)
BMI > 30
A diagnosis of a psychiatric disease - more commonly bipolar or depression
Unemployed and receiving disability benefits
On Medicaid
Irrational fear of anesthesia and surgical procedures
But to answer your question the 'disease' itself has no actual pathological basis in my opinion and is rather a diagnosis of exclusion
