Man I dropped some coins in Space Port or whatever the arcade that was there at the time.
In all honesty, they need to tear the whole mall down and redevelop the whole property.
If they could parcel it out, maybe something similar to the Juban development would work.

Going to the mall & getting Chick fil a was a treat, way better than going to McDonalds

Great memories of going with my grandma when we were kids

Sounds perfect for Cortana. Have it be the setting of a show or movie where the mall gets destroyed in the end

That corndog place was really great too. There was also a good place to get Philly cheesesteaks as well.

If you are of a certain age, this is sad. BR was not always a shitehole, believe it or not. Florida Blvd was nice, there was no Bluebonnet, Chi-Chi's was slammed and the chimp at Fun Fair Park was plotting how to derail the Wild Mouse with nothing more than a cigarette lighter and some arm strength.

Haha!! No doubt.
Yep, to me Florida blvd / Airline was the epicenter of Baton Rouge excitement as a youngster. I went and did a walkthrough of Cortana mall a couple months ago just for old times sake, and it was a really cool experience. Not much left in there, but still lit up, A/C kicking, music playing, just like all humans got abducted and I was the only one left. Hurry and go do this, if you like these sentimental sort of things. Highly recommend.

How nobody ever died riding the Wild Mouse is one of life's great mysteries.
I always thought someone actually did die on that ride...or is that just a local myth?

The opening of Mall of Louisiana - which is bigger, nicer, and much closer to a freeway - was the beginning of the end for Cortana. Cortana itself was opened just a few miles east of the primary competitive target - Bon Marche. I think they'd have lasted much longer if they'd have opened up closer to I-12 - perhaps around where Hammond Aire is now.

Baton Rouge was never really a "two mall" town. Few places are. One opens, another one struggles and eventually closes down.

There's an exception I guess: Bon Marche didn't successfully kill the old Goudchaux's department store (Maison Blanche) downtown. It took the Maison Blanche company going belly up to do that in the late 1990s. I think the massive old building is used as state office building now.

Completely agree. Growing up in the early 80's in BR was really great. Lot of good memories walking around that mall with my friends on a Fri/Sat night.

Correctional Facility... SIR!

Or an old folks home.

Now, I could see old malls being great places to put something like the Alzheimer's/dementia homes that they're building in Europe that are made to look like a streetfront with grocery stores, hairdressers, etc., that allow the people to freely move around and have a "normal" life, but everyone they interact with is a healthcare provider and there's no way to get out. Wide open unused enclosed malls seem like they'd be great for something like that.

It probably would cost a fortune to get it up to meet healthcare regulations in this country, though.

I can remember when North Baton Rouge was a bustling, predominantly white, blue collar, area of tradesmen who worked at the Esso Refinery. This all changed in the late-70's and early 80's.
