Full Story - Females Physcians Get Paid Less

Female Physicians 'Do Not Work As Hard,' Male Doctor Tells Medical Journal

A male doctor from Texas is getting backlash for comments published in the Dallas Medical Journal in which he said female physicians are paid less because they don’t work as hard as their male counterparts.

Studies have shown there is indeed a large gender pay gap in medicine. And while the reasons in that particular field are still being studied, the overall gender pay gap has a number of causes, including women being penalized for having children and discrimination in hiring, promotion and negotiating salaries, among other factors.

So as one might imagine, Tigges’ sentiment was not well received, and not just by female physicians.

There are men who do that too. I know a practice where one doctor makes 4x the other two male doctors of the practice because they're nearing retirement and they just don't care to work as much so they only take a quarter of the patients

The average man working full-time spends two hours more each week on the job than does the average full-time working woman. It shouldn’t be a surprise — or considered unfair — that someone who works longer hours also earns more money.

That is what is so misleading about the "work full time" talking point...."full time" is a vague phrasing... what matters is the exact numbers of hours worked, not the general term for going over a certain number of hours.

Physicians in private practice make what they earn, so if they make less then it’s because they aren’t producing as much revenue - which is usually because they have less volume. Even employed physicians usually have their pay tied to productivity, so again if they make less it’s because they are doing less work.

It's already happening. I was just reading the comments on the article. Nine out of 10 are hate comments.

yeah odds are the data backs this up and then it shifts to "why aren't we creating standards that reward the thorough examinations that women doctors give?"

This is nothing new. Uber did an extensive study on their male bs female drivers.

Male drivers were found to work longer hours, accept more riders, and drive through more dangerous parts of town.

They found that this gender pay gap is almost all self selecting. That is .77 to the dollar turns into ninety something to the dollar when all factors are controlled for

Considering data shows youre less likely to die or be readmitted if you have a female doctor (and this costs money), this is a fair question.

Should penalize doctors more if you have too many patients readmitted.

Do you have a link for that data? And if we penalize doctors for readmissions, then doctors will be hesitant to accept higher risk patients.

He is right, but may be vilified for the truth. Women work less hours than men in most professions.

Ftr, my doc is a lady, and she gives great service. I'd rather a doc like her than one aiming for max Insurance claims

Just adjust it by disease state. Obviously I'm not suggesting grouping in AAA ruptures with pancreatitis or chest pain observations.
