When this thread first started I asked my mom about theirs
She said FEMA told her she had to file with home owners insurance first then if she was denied (she was) to file with FEMA
She was still waiting on the actual denial letter to send to FEMA
Aren't you out in Central?

Son???

I bought one of the Ryobi generators at Home Depot a couple days after the storm (actually, my son did with my card, while I was at work).

I was denied by FEMA, later told I needed to get a denial from homeowners.
That makes zero fricking sense. I already knew my homeowner's insurance was not going to cover the cost of buying a generator, if I had zero structural damage (I may have shingle damage, but no leaks since, so I can't tell). The cost of the generator, just like the allowance for claimed spoilt food, was below my deductible anyway. I simply cooked what I could (gas stove), used Ryobi lights and fans, with an inverter in a vehicle in case I needed to recharge a battery... had enough batteries that I never needed to.

I bought the generator to assist someone who watched my son when I was locked in at work, and their power went out. It's mine now.

When I submitted, I did claim loss of power (as I did have that). I already had a generator I bought after Rita, that I set up for the very first time, and ran about 1 hr before Entergy was restored (so probably 3-4 days without power, considering I wasn't home to set it up a few days).
After my power was restored, I sent that generator to my brother's, who had a tree in his roof. Then picked up the generator for the other person, who was still out.

FEMA "says" they reimburse, but it's so damn political and random, you have to jump through whatever hoops. Not worth the pain in the arse to do everything they want, if you can afford and use it anyway. We'll have more storms in the future.

My parents should be approved as my mom has MS & has medication that has to stay refrigerated

I would say they could easily afford it but after being denied for a new roof (missing shingles in a few areas & leaks in 2 different rooms) they paid out of pocket for a new roof
Also lost back & side fence, insurance only covered 1 side so they came out of pocket for that as well

They both worked & paid taxes their entire lives, it’s crap how people who pay & pay are the ones getting screwed when anyone on SNAP automatically gets more money regardless of if they lost power or not

Just like the ones who have never gotten a W-2 in their lives but get hundreds or even thousands "back" in taxes every year.

Wonderful system we have here in the US. No wonder people are risking their lives to get here illegally by the droves ever year.

How does this work? fraudulent entries to a service like TurboTax?

Best I can tell is they get to claim the same credits as working people i.e. child tax credits etc.

Set up an LLC or fake business account and claim losses? I know people who have LLC's just for the purpose of buying vehicles or property. Their LLC consists of 1 person, themselves and has no income but I suspect they have a lot of losses every year.

I actually felt a little bad about it when I applied. It didn't stop me from applying though.

I'm not too upset about the denial, I never expected to be reimbursed when I bought the generator.

For everyone who got approved for Generator reimbursement...did you file an insurance claim and provide a denial letter to FEMA?

No. I rent and don’t have renters insurance. FEMA rep came out and ask me a few questions like how long I was without power, did any of my personnel property receive damage, did I purchase a generator (I showed her my receipt and told her i had uploaded the receipt), she said good and checked a box on her iPad.

A couple weeks later I got an email telling me I had been approved for the $800 and it was direct deposited a few days later.

Chainsaw still pending

Upon second look and speaking with a FEMA rep, my denial was for any assistance for damages to my home. I didn't have any damages and wasn't seeking any compensation so I guess that confused me.

She stated the generator reimbursement did get approved and should hit my account some time next week.
