i completely understand and agree with this sentiment. however, what you spell out is one hell of a life lesson. One that you will undoubtedly pass along to your kids. thus, there is less of dependence upon the government in one generation. this is the way.

How is this going to affect flood insurance/NFIP since it's part of FEMA?
Posted on 6/11/25 at 11:20 am to Shexter
Eliminating FEMA while it sounds good, would expose the real incompetence of many governors to handle disasters like hurricanes....as well as limits of state ability.
You could frick a lot of people in the process who were fricked by the original disaster

frick FEMA. They screwed over so many of my friends/family after the flood
nobody in Louisiana has any moral high ground for saying “frick FEMA” LOL. This will be exhibit A for being careful what you wish for

Most if not all states have a state equivalent organization. Louisiana ha s GOESEP. They train and prepare year round. Some are full time , while other s volunteer from the state agencies to perform their GOESEP jobs when emergencies occur. It is extremely well run and organized. As long as the fed money flows to it to pay for the uncovered costs, the FEMA admin is not needed. They hinder more than they help.

may God have mercy on the poor souls stuck in blue states.

I'm not so sure that concentrating more power into the Executive office is the best answer, or even a good one. I'm sure it looks good when your team has a guy in the office, though.

I have zero faith in my Governor, the same Governor who rented and anorexic tiger to bring to the LSU game to watch us lose by 40.
Louisiana will be cooked

FEMA was proven corrupt and inadequate when the NC flooding victims couldn’t get more than $750 apiece because Biden and Harris had given all the FEMA funds to the Middle East. Good riddance.

I was wondering the same thing. Even though there are now private companies issuing flood policies, there are areas where it's impossible to get one. You may move this program to some other department, but there's no way you can phase it out. There are too many areas where it's the only option.

like the other guy said…don’t think about it just go with it. It will be fine

FEMA’s service level won’t be significantly worse after being dismantled.

This also means that people need to start paying attention and scrutinizing who their county/parish Emergency Management Association director is. That agency, at the state and county/parish level will, inevitably, have to grow. You better have a good one in charge at both levels, and I mean one with actual emergency response chops and the ability to play the political game.

Am absolutely dreadful decision. If you live in the south, this should piss you off.
What has FEMA done for you after a hurricane?
There will still be federal assistance. We dont need a huge bloated agency to do it

Oh yea, this will work out well for Louisiana..
Who gives a shite? If you're the governor and legislature of a state prone to natural disasters, it's YOUR JOB to mitigate risks to the extent financially viable (including rainy day funds for actual disasters, I mean, they're fricking called rainy day funds.)
How do you like paying billions to California when they continue to not thin forests, etc? How do you think someone from South Dakota feels paying for Louisianans to rebuild the Superdome, throw money at levee boards that end up building entertainment "wharfs" as flood mitigation, etc.?
Take a look at Florida. After the condo collapse, they did the hard thing and legislated that condo boards increase inspections and increase assessments to prevent a bunch of people from being pancaked by concrete, because it was the responsible thing to do. Did it cause values to crash, and assessments to spike? Yes. It sucks, but it's their job.

true.
prime example: 2023, Hurricane Helene.

Who else was responsible for that then?

Phasing it out completely will probably be looked back upon poorly. Oh well this is what we elected.

A lot of dumbass meteorologists will no longer be able to read a weather map.
