Federal officials will host a press conference Thursday morning to make a "significant announcement" about violent crime efforts in Baton Rouge, according to a release Monday from U.S. Attorney Corey Amundson's office.
Additional details about the announcement were not available, but Mayor-President Sharon Broome said last week she plans to request help from State Police for curbing violent crime, which has risen in recent months.
"Any little bit would help. ... If it's two officers it would help," Jonny Dunnam, interim police chiefm said last week.
The city has endured a spate of murders and shootings in recent weeks — and 61 homicides in the city so far this year — and Dunnam hopes troopers can help him address violent crime.
"Our specific need — it isn't necessarily traffic crime, it's homicide, it's gun violence, a lot of it is drug-related," he noted.
Other agencies have bolstered city patrols in the past.

Hamsterdam was cutting edge 13 years ago, Baton Rouge is always running about 10 years behind the trends.
