After mechanical difficulties with the tour bus, Holly had chartered a plane for his band to fly between stops on the Winter Dance Party Tour. However, Richardson, who had the flu, convinced Holly’s band member Waylon Jennings to give up his seat, and Ritchie Valens won a coin toss for another seat on the plane.

Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens Die in Plane Crash

quote:

Rising American rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson are killed when their chartered Beechcraft Bonanza plane crashes in Iowa a few minutes after takeoff from Mason City on a flight headed for Moorhead, Minnesota. Investigators blamed the crash on bad weather and pilot error. Holly and his band, the Crickets, had just scored a No. 1 hit with “That’ll Be the Day.”

quote:

Singer Don McLean memorialized Holly, Valens and Richardson in the 1972 No. 1 hit “American Pie,” which refers to February 3, 1959 as “the day the music died.”

The music didn't die, because Waylon wasn't on the plane.

Seems like I remember reading that he had survivor's guilt for a long time after the crash.

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But, something touched me deep inside
The Day
The Music...Died.

Jennings let Richardson have his seat because Richardson was sick with the flu.

Valens wanted to fly too, so he and Allsup had a coin toss to decide who would get on the plane.

Valens won the coin toss, which turned out to cost him his life.

To hear Allsup explain the story on YouTube,

mike judge's tales from the tour bus did an episode on Waylon Jennings and they talk about that for a bit.

Highly highly recommend that show.

The Buddy Holly Story and La Bamba are 2 great movies about the musicians that died that day for anyone that hasn't seen them. As batshit crazy as Gary Busey is, he was amazing in the Buddy Holly Story.

The Saga Begins

A long long time ago
In a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
Could talk the Federation into
Maybe cutting them a little slack
But their response, it didn't thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas
Then met Jar Jar and Boss Nass
We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to Theed to see the queen
We all wound up on Tatooine
That's where we found this boy

Oh my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi,
Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Did you know this junkyard slave
Isn't even old enough to shave
But he can use the Force they say
Ah, do you see him hitting on the queen
Though he's just nine and she's fourteen
Yeah, he's probably gonna marry her someday
Well, I know he built C3PO
And I've heard how fast his pod can go
And we were broke, it's true
So we made a wager or two
He was a prepubescent flyin' ace
And the minute Jabba started off that race
Well, I know who would win first place
Oh yes, it was our boy

We started singin', my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Now we finally got to Coruscant
The Jedi Council we knew would want
To see how good the boy could be
So we took him there and we told the tale
How his midi-chlorians were off the scale
And he might fulfill that prophecy
Oh, the Council was impressed, of course
Could he bring balance to the force?
They interviewed the kid
Oh, training they forbid
Because Yoda sensed in him much fear
And Qui-Gon said, "Now listen here
Just stick it in your pointy ear
I still will teach this boy"

He was singin' my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi,
Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

We caught a ride back to Naboo
Cause Queen Amidala wanted to
I frankly would've liked to stay
We all fought in that epic war
And it wasn't long at all before
Little Hotshot flew his plane and saved the day
And in the end some Gungans died
Some ships blew up and some pilots fried
A lot of folks were croakin'
The battle droids were broken
And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast
Well, I'm still here and he's a ghost
I guess I'll train this boy

And I was singin', my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi
Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

We were singin', my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

It would have been nice to see what Buddy Holly put out musically in the 60s and 70s.

Bye bye Miss Chair Model Lady.
I dreamt that we were married
And you treated me nice.
We had lots of kids
Drinking whiskey and rye.
So why’d you have to go off and die?
Oh why"d you have to go off and die?

What would make for the equivalent of this tragedy, toady? For those who weren't around in the 1950s, would this equate to Taylor Swift dying in an accident in 2022?

I grew-up in the 1980s. Was this like Michael Jackson and Madonna being tragically killed? Just looking for a bit of modern perspective...

It would be like Bruce Springstein, Steven Tyler, and Prince all dying in the same plane crash.

Rock and roll was a new and different genre, so the closest modern equivalent would probably have to be Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder.
