My grandfather (Mom's Dad) was a Marine who served on Guadalcanal.

Correct. Col. Chuck Cooper in one of his books said, at one point, the combat was so close, they were using grenades and .45s.
Too close for bolt-action rifles.

All the battles in the south Pacific helped turn the tide in the war. My dad was at Guam during the campaign. I remember as a kid about once a month he would wake up yelling fire. My older sister said he only talked about it once, there were some horrific fire fights.

His story was an episode of "Dogfights" on the History Chanell.

Yep. That's what made me think of it.

I have always hoped one of the posters on here had run into him or knew him in years past.

My old man was an artillery officer on Guadalcanal. First action after he got commissioned. Never said much about it. If I asked any questions he would shove a book in my hands and tell me to read up. A” history of the first Marine division in World War II” or Sledges book. But never answered any questions.

My grandfather was there. Contracted malaria. Was in a field hospital at Henderson Field when it was nearly overran by the Japanese. Eventually evacuated.
